The email blast from the head of my son and daughter's theater group relayed a frantic plea: "We need to raise $16,000 before the upcoming spring performances."

If the money didn't materialize in time, she warned, there could be a serious problem with the shows: nobody would hear the actors.

Random Farms, and tens of thousands of other theater companies, schools, churches, broadcasters, and myriad other interests across the country, need to buy new wireless microphones.

The majority of professional wireless audio gear in America is about to become obsolete, and illegal to operate. The story of how we got to this strange point involves politics, business, science, and, of course, money.

Four years ago, in an effort to bolster the country's tech infrastructure, the FCC decreed that the portion of the radio spectrum used by most wireless mics would be better utilized for faster and more robust mobile broadband service.

Now, as the telecom companies that won the rights to that spectrum begin to use it, the prior tenants are scrambling for new radio-frequency homes.

While we can't pretend to have applied for too many CEO positions in our time, on the surface this looks promising...
IN THE BASSMENT

Featuring a solid Sitka spruce top, this parlor-style acoustic bass puts out an impressive level of volume and rich tone - the type you typically find in acoustic basses at a higher price point. The AVNB1E features a mahogany back, sides, and neck with an ovangkol fingerboard with classic white dot inlays. The AVNB1E also comes with a Fishman Sonicore pickup that translates the vintage tone of the AVNB1E beautifully when amplified.

Because it was so much fun the first time around, we got Joe back in the studio with a different classic guitar in his hands: the Gibson Les Paul. This video presents 20 of the most classic and recognizable riffs ever written on the Gibson mainstay kicking off with "Rebel Rebel" from the late David Bowie's Diamond Dogs, it then slides into classics like "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac and "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith.

The ii-V-i line in this video uses two modes with one chromatic passing note added for a little extra color in the line itself. I hope you find it illuminating. Practice it slowly, and get the line comfortable under your fingers. I also give you a couple of suggestions for ways to look at fingering the Altered Scale and it's parent Melodic Minor scale too.
GREAT GEAR
When working with music gear, the simplest approach usually provides the most satisfying and inspiring experience. Unfortunately, going wireless and maintaining great tone has historically been rife with complications and expense, putting untethered freedom out of the reach of the average musician. But BOSS has changed all that with the affordable WL series, an all-new product line that makes it easy and convenient for every musician to enjoy wireless independence wherever they play.
ARTIST AWARENESS

A few years ago, Carmen Vandenberg, a rock guitarist with a strong blues background, finished up a concert in London with vocalist Rosie Bones, her partner in the band BONES. It had been a killer performance, and a male concertgoer approached to tell the duo as much-with a caveat. He informed Vandenberg, implausibly, that her band would in fact always be inferior, since, having smaller hands, no woman could ever play guitar as skillfully as a man!
