This comic lays out 2000 years of musical history.

Again and again there have been attempts to police music; to restrict borrowing and cultural cross-fertilization.

To those who think that mash-ups and sampling started with YouTube or the DJ's turntables, it might be shocking to find that musicians have been borrowing, extensively borrowing, from each other since music began.

Then why try to stop that process? The reasons varied. Philosophy, religion, politics, race - and law.

The history in this book runs from Plato to Blurred Lines and beyond.

To understand this history fully, one has to roam into musical technologies and the incentive systems that got musicians paid.

Since launching in 2016, this Series has made quite the mark in electric guitar market, but it seems some of the lines are currently being phased out and guitarists can expect future product launches. Fender has already unveiled tons of new products this month, so a revamp of the American Professional Series isn't out of the question for this year.
IN THE BASSMENT

The necks on modern basses are huge, and the frets so far apart. Back in the '60s, European musical instrument makers like Hofner, Framus, Hagstrom and Eko made basses with necks so skinny, they felt more like a cello than a bass. This semihollow-body bass IV has one of the narrowest necks made. It's perfect for the guitarist who wants to play some bass.

To rearrange the third movement from Debussy's Suite bergamasque is kind of a challenge. To transform the music from piano to guitar is a retelling. I think you succeeded. The condition of your frets will determine how well your guitar plays. Every time you press your strings against the frets, the friction between them subtly changes the shape of the frets, causing them to wear out. Over time, this metal-against-metal contact can lead to string rattle and intonation issues. Fret wear is a normal by-product of playing your instrument. It's important to know how to evaluate fret damage and understand what options you have to correct it.
