The 80s was the golden age of new sound technology, digital, and the dawn of synthesizers like the
Yamaha DX7, released in 1983.
Why was the DX7 more appealing than the analogue sounds we now associate with the height of synth quality?
Polyphonic explains how the DX7 used an algorithm called FM (frequency modulation) synthesis, which allowed for more refined control and modulation than the subtractive synthesis of analog synths built by Moog, ARP, Buchla, and other specialized makers in the 70s.
In fact, Yamaha's digital synth was so popular that it almost single-handedly spawned the third-party sound design industry, and forced other synthesizer manufacturers to take a hard look at how they were building their own instruments.

Here's what one of our satisfied customers had to say: Who ever designed the 12-Tone logo, give them a two-thumbs up from me. It's a very elegant yet powerful design. Very balanced visually. Using two of the most common symbols from music speaks universally to possibly most of humankind. The logo lets people know, hey, I love music and hey, I play a musical instrument as well. Wearing the logo can certainly open doorways of conversation with strangers that share the same love of music and performance. - Nathan

WATCH THIS
Ever since he had his Marshall amps modified to go to 11, Spinal Tap lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel has had his finger on the pulse of the cutting edge of ... something. For instance, how can we forget his famous amplifier capo? "Capos were an obstruction to my hand as I was playing. So I thought, if I could put it 'round my amplifier speaker, I could move my hand up as much as I would like-and only have to learn how to play in one key."

LEARN HERE
Some readers may be surprised to learn that the ripping solo in "Taxman" was played by Paul McCartney, but in fact, the Beatle bassist provided a handful of standout guitar moments on the band's recordings. "Back in the USSR," "The End," and "Good Morning Good Morning" are just a few examples.

GREAT GEAR
The Finnish-made Microtubes X Ultra has a six-band EQ and splits your sound through two variable low-pass and high-pass filters. The high-pass handles mostly the mids and high-end and, like the others in the Microtubes series, is distorted with CMOS circuitry. The low-pass is left clean and subsequently processed by the the pedal's built-in compressor, which is easily adjustable.
