FEATURED ARTICLE

I went searching for quotes, wisdom, truths and quips about what guitar playing is all about! Here are some that I found.

Inevitably, pretty much all these quotes are from books, video, magazine interviews, various websites etc so their 100% accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Yep, it's a shame but true - I haven't actually questioned both Andres Segovia and Waylon Jennings. (Jimmy Page and John Lee Hooker, on the other hand...)

Also, these quotes are, in turn, erudite, off-the-cuff, dismissive, deep-thinking, downright silly and often completely contradictory. Who ever said all guitar players thought the same, anyway?

Some are from players you'll love and listen to. Others from people you ignore or have never even heard of. So what?

To paraphrase what Jimmy Page says later on, everyone's got something to say and everyone's got something valid to say.

Ignore them all over again if you wish, but I trust you'll find at least some of these nuggets of wisdom inspirational.

Here we go...

The idea of hot rodding your guitar encompasses anything you do to make the instrument special for you. Every day  people are looking for ideas to take their guitar to the next level. Hot rodding comes in many forms, and any one of them can inspire you to explore, play more, have fun, and sound more like yourself.
IN THE BASSMENT

I find that cars and wine are always useful analogies when reviewing bass guitars. A $6,000.00 instrument is comparable to a Ferrari F40 or 1956 Château d'Yquem. A $125.00 bass can be likened to a 1989 Mazda or a 2017 Merlot from Lidl. You get the picture. But just to confuse the issue, here's a bass with a price tag that says 2018 Volkswagen, that has the looks of a 1960s Camaro and the feel of a 1970s Mercedes. What's your simile-fixated thoughts?

Got two minutes? Paul Gilbert's got a blues lick you can learn. In this video, the shredder takes his Ibanez signature ax in hand to demonstrate a simple lick that you can easily incorporate into your playing. While Gilbert notes that it's a Robin Trower-like lick, it's versatile enough to use in a range of styles, including rock and metal. Grab your ax, and get ready to learn.

GREAT GEAR
The new Boss SY-1 Synthesizer pedal is a downsized version of Boss' SY-300. The SY-1 packs in 121 synthesizer sounds, and requires no special pickup, all the while delivering polyphonic tracking for guitarists. The SY-1 features rhythmic synth patterns, plus lead, pad, organ and bass synth sounds. All can be tweaked via the pedal's tone/rate and depth knobs.
ARTIST AWARENESS

A genuinely astounding bassist, Mohini Dey has enjoyed a rapid ascent to worldwide renown in recent years. As a kid she performed alongside a fearsome range of talent in her home town of Mumbai, including the composers A.R. Rahman and Nitin Sawhney, before coming to the attention of another stellar cast of players in the West. Musicians such as Guthrie Govan, Dave Weckl, Jordan Rudess, Steve Vai, Mike Stern, George Brooks and Narada Michael Walden have shared a stage or studio with Dey, and no modern NAMM Show is complete without her.
