The "Star-Spangled Banner" stirs pride. Ed Sheeran's "The Shape of You" sparks joy. And "ooh là là!" best sums up the seductive power of George Michael's "Careless Whispers."

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have surveyed more than 2,500 people in the United States and China about their emotional responses to these and thousands of other songs from genres including rock, folk, jazz, classical, marching band, experimental and heavy metal.

The upshot? The subjective experience of music across cultures can be mapped within at least 13 overarching feelings: Amusement, joy, eroticism, beauty, relaxation, sadness, dreaminess, triumph, anxiety, scariness, annoyance, defiance, and feeling pumped up.

Imagine organizing a massively eclectic music library by emotion and capturing the combination of feelings associated with each track. That's essentially what our study has done.

I used to think all the different ways to make a viable electric guitar had been exhausted, and that after 60-plus years we have essentially been left with variations of Strats, Les Pauls and Country Gentlemen. However, from time to time, I discover a modern luthier who is brave enough to try something ridiculous, like Bohemian Guitars of Atlanta, Georgia. The company was founded by brothers Adam and Shaun Lee, expats from Johannesburg, South Africa.
IN THE BASSMENT

The SLG4 comes in a 30.5-inch scale four-string and a 32-inch scale five-string. Each is built with a white limba body, figured maple top, and acrylic impregnated maple fingerboard. The three-piece maple neck is reinforced with carbon. It has a Hybrid Humbucker which is essentially two single-coils that are hooked up to a 3-way mini switch. Giving you a vintage single-coil, modern single-coil, and a combined humbucker. The bass comes as passive or with a new East 2 band EQ with active/passive.

Stephanie Jones plays The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel. This comes via her great YouTube Channel. Great playing and arrangement by Jones who you might already know from her solo videos or her work in the Weimar Guitar Quartet. Arrangement by Lawson and Trueman. Production by Jakob Schmidt. I'm impressed with the sound of the Zoom H6 recorder that she's using.

If you've ever sat down with a bass guitar, a row of effects pedals and an amp and tried to replicate the tone of a classic bassline, you'll know that it's harder than you'd think. There are so many variables, from your strings, guitar EQ, effects sequence and amplifier tone controls that it's easy to get lost among all the signal-shaping options. But don't despair: in bass world, as long as you're not searching for the craziest tone in history, achieving a useful sound is largely a case of balancing low-end, mids, treble and overdrive.
GREAT GEAR

This 15-watt monster features a Green clean channel coupled with a Red "full burn" channel. Packing four JJ ECC83S 12AX7 preamp tubes and two JJ EL84 power tubes, the amp also features dual-concentric gain and volume controls for independent control of each channel, in addition to shared EQ presence and resonance controls. It also comes with a 1/4-power switch that reduces its output to 3.5 watts, dual parallel speaker output jacks, an effects loop, a one-button footswitch and an internal bias control port.
ARTIST AWARENESS

The Rolling Stones are still a massive commercial presence in 2020, selling out stadiums worldwide without new music to sell and their bassist since 1993 is Darryl Jones, who is a force of nature, with a stage and session career that is second to none. Jones is a deeply serious fellow when asked about the nuts and bolts of his trade, but one who dissolves into laughter when recalling the more 'unorthodox' of his former employers such as Miles Davis.
