What makes one artisan stand out in a field of highly skilled competitors?

When we think of classical instruments, we think of the Stradivari family, famed makers of violins, violas, cellos, and other instruments. But the Stradivarius' success may owe as much to chance as to superior craftsmanship.

A Texas A&M professor emeritus of biochemistry discovered that Stradivarius instruments were soaked in chemicals to protect them from a worm infestation that was sweeping through Italy in the 1700s.

By pure accident, this method of pest control had the unintended result of producing the unique sounds that have been almost impossible to duplicate in the past 400 years.

The first offering in what Gibson promises will be a "multi-year partnership" with the Tool guitarist, the Silverburst stunner will be available in two versions. The first is a run of 79 Adam Jones 1979 Les Paul Custom replicas, each aged in exacting detail to match Jones' own '79 Les Paul Custom by the Gibson Custom Shop's Murphy Lab, and signed and numbered by Jones.
IN THE BASSMENT

Take the evocatively titled SR2405W-BTL, a quite exquisite five-string from Ibanez's SR Premium lineup A shallow-bodied beaut, finished in Brown Topaz, with gold hardware and a pair of active Aguilar Super Double single-coil pickups, this is a pro-quality instrument that's accessibly priced, and testament to Ibanez's imagination when it comes to tonewoods.

Mountain's first gig was at Fillmore West in 1969. Lesile West had been using Marshall amps, and that's what I expected to find when I opened a bunch of cartons that had arrived from the airport, but instead I got a Sunn - and it wasn't even a guitar amp!
GREAT GEAR
It's well-established that AmazonBasics is a place where you can find everything from charging cables to dog food bowls at startlingly low prices. Now though, the retail giant has - remarkably - dipped its toes into... guitar effects. These mini-pedals includes Boost, Compressor, Delay, Distortion, Looper, Overdrive and Tuner that are outfitted with metal enclosures, true-bypass switching and no more than three controls.
ARTIST AWARENESS

Born in Philadelphia, Beck moved to Manhattan in his teens, playing six nights a week in a trio setting  in the thriving New York music scene. When he was 18, Stan Getz hired him to record jingles, and in 1967 he recorded with Miles Davis. By 1968 he was a member of the Gil Evans Orchestra. Beck played in a variety of jazz styles, including jazz fusion, post bop, mainstream jazz, and soul jazz. He also respected rock stylists and cross-over players and briefly flirted with rock music styles himself in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
