It started with the Sex Pistols. Specifically, with the Sex Pistols' June 4, 1976, show at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. The concert now ranks as one of the most influential performances of all time, up there with Woodstock.

But the audience, not the band, made the show famous. Around 30 or 40 people showed up and rumor has it that the crowd included the guys who would go on to start bands like the Smiths, Joy Division, and the Buzzcocks.

Rumors are enough for the designers at Dorothy, a studio that just released a data-viz poster called "Alternative Love Blueprint-A History of Alternative Music." The poster begins with the Sex Pistols. A charted history of counterculture rock music spills out from there, though not in any kind of linear, board game kind of way.

"Taking that gig as a starting point, I tried to map out the bands who influenced each other in some way up to that point, from the early proto-punk and garage rockers through CBGB's era of punk," says James Quail, the designer.

"Then I mapped out where those scenes led through punk, post-punk, 2 tone & ska, hardcore, Riot Grrrl, grunge, and so on."

Paul recalls the process behind the new single: "With this one I was in the studio with Ryan Tedder whereas the rest of the album has been made with Greg Kurstin... We were just thinking of ideas and little pieces of melody and chords and the song just came together bit by bit. And then I would try and make some kind of sense of the story. So it was like 'Come on baby now. Talk about yourself. Tell the truth, let me get to know you' and basically I wanna know how you feel, you make me wanna go out and steal. I just want it for you. So that was the basic idea and it developed from there... sort of a love song, but a raunchy love song. There you go - fuh you."

We each have our own favorites, whether it be a particular player, style or era. However, that doesn't mean such a list can't be based on some element of objective reasoning. To some extent, the proof is in all of us: anyone who picks up the instrument borrows at least a handful of techniques and stylistic tendencies that someone else brought to the table. The key is determining which guitarists have had the most impact among the larger number of players-in other words, who has contributed most across the board to the way we approach the instrument. One thing is for certain: if the following musicians are not the 12 most influential guitarists of all time, they are certainly 12 of the most influential.

GREAT GEAR
This pedal is as straight forward as it gets. Furry Burrito is a versatile overdrive/fuzz pedal that ranges from a nice, warm overdrive to a saturated fuzz that produces that Muff-like sustain. Fried Gold is a versatile overdrive pedal that ranges from mild to blown out and fuzzy. Designed to complement the front end of a tube amp while mixing wonderfully with the dirt channel to provide more punch and grit.
ARTIST AWARENESS

George Porter, Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid 60's and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977, but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive. Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr.
