The number of iconic death scenes in cinema history can and do fill textbooks hundreds of pages long. Doubtless most of us have seen enough of these scenes to know the basic grammar of feature film, and to recognize the hundreds of references in movies and TV to classic cuts and compositions from Hitchcock, Kubrick, or Kurosawa.

Visual and narrative allusions might leap out at us, but music tends to work in subtler ways, prompting emotional responses without engaging the parts of our brain that make comparisons. Case in point, the videos presented here demonstrate the widespread use of a musical motif of four notes from the "Dies Irae," or "day of wrath," a 13th century Gregorian requiem, or Catholic mass traditionally sung at funerals.

Of course, we know these notes from the iconic, oft-parodied Amadeus scene of Mozart composing the "Dies Irae" movement of his Requiem in his sickbed, as ultimate frenemy Salieri furiously transcribes. Once you hear the magisterially ominous sequence of notes, you might immediately think of Wendy Carlos' themes for The Shining and A Clockwork Orange.

But did you notice these four notes in Disney's The Lion King, Star Wars: Episode IV-A New Hope, or It's a Wonderful Life?

Fender has released the Custom Shop Andy Summers Monochrome Strat. The guitar is custom-wrapped with a collage of monochrome photos taken by Summers. It has a two-piece body is made of alder, with a NOS urethane finish. Its one-piece neck is riftsawn maple, with a 63 C-shaped profile, a 7.25"-radius fingerboard with 21 medium-vintage frets and a neat red camera dot inlay at the 15th fret.
Active and evidently influenced by the classic Stingray design, the 504 comes with a single robust humbucker, a slim neck and a total weight of only 3.8kg. Four bolts anchor the neck solidly enough, while the 24 frets are cleanly dressed, the maple fingerboard feels well-finished and the body is portable but solid.

Legendary musician and producer Ric Ocasek passed away 09/15/2019, and the whole rock world mourns his loss. Greatly respected not only by fans but by fellow musicians. His band, The Cars were raw and edgy, even as their debut album spawned some of their most radio-friendly hit songs, including "Good Times Roll," "My Best Friend's Girl," and "Just What I Needed." See them play the early hits and more at the in this 1979 full concert film, and let the good times roll.
Vernon Reid's Abstract Fretboard Logic

Considering he's christened his greater New York homestead "The Abstract Ranch," it's a good bet a face-to-face lesson with Vernon Reid might go beyond garden variety blues, rock or bebop licks. Sure enough, the veteran jazz-punk/metal-funk alchemist treats us to a heady fretboard odyssey of wide intervallic leaps, quasi-atonality and unorthodox applications of hybrid picking.
