BEAUTIFUL NEW MURAL IN JP
Mural Artist Ignacio Garcia says of the neighbors who contracted him, "A wedding gift to remember their love and their passion for local native species here in the Sonoran desert. What an honor for them to hire me to paint this beautiful element of this delicate ecosystem here at the Jefferson Park Neighborhood."
Next time you are out, mosey on by Vine and Seneca to see this beautiful work of art.

138kV Overhead Lines thru JP--Maybe so!
See location of Vine Substation
| |
The TEP Survey Kino to DeMoss-Petri Project is now defunct. The project has been renamed the TEP Midtown Reliability Project, and all original routes have been abandoned. As you'll note from the map, the study area has expanded to just east of Country Club Road. As of yet, there are no proposed routes. With the defeat of Proposition 412, there is no longer a Campbell-Kino route and no clear funding for undergrounding.
The location of the proposed Vine Substation, however, remains unchanged, just on the southern border of Jefferson Park at Vine and Lester. As such, it means that lines in and out will almost certainly go through JP. In other words, JP still remains in the unenviable position as the neighborhood that could be potentially be the most affected by this project.
The Underground Steering Committee, comprised of several neighborhoods, continues to advocate for no overhead lines in midtown.
Note that TEP will host a Public Open House about the project, Thursday, Sept. 21, 6–8 p.m., Doubletree Hotel—Reid Park, 445 S. Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ 85711.
In addition, Jefferson Park has scheduled a meeting with TEP for November 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Ward III, so we are able to discuss our specific concerns.
A project webpage is available at Midtown Reliability Project—Tucson Electric Power (tep.com), where visitors will find an interactive map, an online comment form, and other information about the project.
Please take the short online survey about the project: https://uestep.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7VtdRam1ZT5WLlk?Q_DL=0Uk3XG7MsZ7iAUs_7VtdRam1ZT5WLlk_CGC_AD4bOV2Jf8iRld0&Q_CHL=email

Neighbors -- Lend A Hand Senior Services (LAH), a non-profit that our neighborhood belongs to, is looking for a new coordinator. The position is about 25 hours a week and pays a stipend of $1,500 a month. The job helps our senior and other clients obtain the services that they need. Jefferson Park neighbor, Trish Gehlen, volunteered with LAH and was the coordinator for three years. Building a Resilient Neighborhood - BaRN
Making connections - BaRN (Building a Resilient Neighborhood) is offering 1-hour Zoom sessions on emergency preparedness and making connections between neighbors. Topics include how to be a CAP (Connect & Protect) Block Connector and creating a CAP Block in your own neighborhood. -
Sharing emergency preparedness information in the HOUSEHOLD EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS CHECKLIST, helping neighbors be better prepared
- Collecting contact information from residents on their block who are willing, so that people can reach each other in an emergency
- Serving as the primary contact on their block for the Neighborhood or Homeowners Association in case of an extended power outage or other catastrophe

Water is Life
Rainwater harvesting classes and films
| |
Our friends at the Loft, Sustainable Tucson and Watershed Management Group are teaming up and bringing a short film showcase that’ll run throughout the day on Saturday, September 16th. It’ll begin at the WMG living lab with a family ‘how to’ instructional on making your own rainwater harvesting basin and conclude at the Loft with short films covering all-things water.
The WMG living lab is located at 1137 N. Dodge, just off Speedway. From 8am until 11am they’ll host Family Saturday where the WMG staff will teach you how to make your own basin. They’ll send you home with a free build-your-own-basin kit. Then at 11:30 you’ll tour their whole facility seeing all the creative ways you can join WMG in conserving water at your own home.
The Loft joins the day of activities beginning at 2pm. There will be live music to kick off the series of short-film documentaries. They’ll have 8 films in total.

Donations to Casa Alitas Refugees
.... needed now more than ever
| |
Per Steve Kozachik's newsletter: "I’m in touch with some of our shelter operators and the description I get of the number of guests being delivered by CBP is that they’re already ‘very slammed.’ The numbers will escalate once the government ends the COVID-based restrictions on entry that Title 42 was to address. So, we will need your donations even more than we have during what has been a relative (very relative) lull in the number of arrivals. We’ve been seeing 300-500 people daily".
SEEKING DONATIONS OF PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS AND UNDERCLOTHING (SOCKS, UNDERWEAR, BRAS) ESPECIALLY IN SIZES SMALL AND MEDIUM
DROP OFF AT WARD VI OFFICE - 3202 E First St - between 9 and 1.
The folks running the Alitas Welcome Center come by the Ward VI weekly to gather the donations you bring into the office. The weekly trips are necessary because they continue to get 300-500 new arrivals daily at Alitas.
We can’t get families who helped in our own war effort united, and we leave it up to donors to help with people coming across our border escaping trauma in their home countries. At the Ward 6 office we continue to be grateful to all of you who see the needs and support the people we’re serving. (from Ward VI newsletter)
