STARTING THE YEAR OFF POSITIVELY

By
Julie O’Mara, The Centre Board Chair and Newsletter Editor

As I was contemplating making New Years’ Resolutions, I caught myself feeling depressed about the state of our world especially politically and, well, in many other ways, too. And I am discouraged about how much “work” there is yet to do towards meeting DEI goals. AND I decided that feeling depressed and discouraged was not going to help. So I have – and want to encourage us all – decided to commit fully to continuing our quest to improve DEI work around the world. This is the essence of The Centre’s mission. Please join with us in working toward this goal. It’s not too late to make it your New Years’ Resolution as well.

Operationalizing the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks
Category 3: D&I STRUCTURE AND IMPLEMENTATION
Part three of a seven-part series
|
|
The Portland Trail Blazers started their journey with the understanding that one training would not be enough to shift the culture of their organization. Stemming from a new, league-wide training requirement, the Portland Trail Blazers made a formal commitment to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within their organization and community in 2016. Their Director of Equity & Inclusion is key to ensuring that there is follow through on that the commitment. "As an organization, we recognized the importance of DEI living within each department, but also wanted someone to be the hub of our DEI efforts. We know that advancing equity and inclusion is complex, and there are specific skills needed to move our internal and external efforts forward successfully. We needed someone who not only has the knowledge but also has the ability to facilitate difficult conversations through an ethos of care. For these reasons, we made the decision to cement our commitment to DEI not only in our strategic plans and statements but also through the creation of the Director of Equity & Inclusion position. Our director is the crux of our DEI work," said Christa Stout, Vice President of Innovation & Impact.
Situated within the Innovation & Impact department, the Director of Equity & Inclusion regularly meets with the Vice President of Innovation & Impact, the Senior Vice President of People & Culture, the Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer, and Team President. The focus of these meetings includes 1) progress on the cross-departmental DEI strategic plan, 2) opportunities for growth, 3) training priorities, and 4) staff and customer experiences and feedback regarding DEI efforts. The Equity and Inclusion Director works closely with the full leadership team through strategic planning, while also leading consciousness-raising and the company's Full Time and Part Time Inclusion Councils.

Note from the editors: This best practice “how to” example is from a global mining company. Sometimes D&I practitioners miss the transferability of examples to other sectors. Please read as we believe these ideas are highly transferable. Click Read More to see the Rio Tinto Projects I&D Principles.
Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks Expert Panelist Duncan Smith believes that normalising the conversation around D&I is a simple but essential strategy for embedding awareness of D&I and changing behaviours in organisations.
“I’m a great believer in the power and impact of simple things carried out with focus and intention,“ says Smith, Principal of ADC Associates Consulting. “In my work over the years with resources companies and other engineering-based organisations I’ve noticed that meetings at all levels have started with a ‘safety share’, often brought up as ‘who’s got a safety topic?’ That got me wondering about the impact of this simple practice on the culture of the organisation. I asked some of my clients how long they’d been starting meetings with a safety topic, and for most the answer was about 20 to 30 years. They said that in the past, companies just accepted that there would be serious safety issues -- resources (predominantly mining and oil & gas) is a dangerous business.”

THE VALUE OF READING NON-FICTION ABOUT D
&I
/DEI – AND A RECOMMENDATION
|
By Julie O’Mara, The Centre Board Chair and newsletter editor
As a way to continue to educate yourself about DEI and stay up to date, we recommend reading – books, articles, blogs and all kinds of vehicles…as well as attending movies and listening to music. So many have DEI themes and messages.
|
|
Yes, reading nonfiction about our work is wonderful too. But fiction can reach a much larger audience. So from time to time, we’ll recommend (and we encourage recommendations from newsletter readers as well) non-fiction that has a strong diversity, equity and inclusion message. And we encourage you to recommend nonfiction reading and watching (movies) as that practice can help educate many people about D&I disparities and how that can cause people to feel and sometimes opt out of society.
Our first such nonfiction book recommendation is
Where the Crawdads Sing
by Delia Owens. It is a popular book in the USA with many book clubs taking on the reading of this book. Among other accolades it has topped the New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 for 27 non-consecutive weeks. Over 4 million copies have sold. And the actress and producer, Reese Witherspoon, has picked up the movie rights. It isn’t billed as a “diversity book” but, in my view, that’s what it is. I won't be a spoiler, but the central character is “North Carolina white swamp trash” – an abandoned child who grows up by herself and in her early twenties is accused of murder. Set mostly in the 1950s through 1970s it tells and helps you to feel the impact of discrimination and assumptions about her. It is a compelling story with a beautiful message about inclusion towards the end of the book. It’s a great read.

FREE ONE-HOUR WEBINAR
INCLUSIVE REMOTE WORK: GETTING IT RIGHT!
|
|
by GDIB EP
Lisa Kepinski
, Inclusion Institute (Germany) and Centre friend, Veronika Hucke (Germany), D&I Strategy and Solutions
|
|
JANUARY 16 at 11AM CST,
The learning outcomes are:
- Understand the framework of remote work and the employee’s experience with this way of working
- Learn about the opportunities and challenges with remote work from multiple perspectives
- Receive pragmatic inspiration on what to do going forward
Globally, more than half of companies allow some form of remote work and, in the U.S., it is already a commonplace reality. Remote work can positively impact how we all do work, providing benefits to the employee, the organization, and society. Having access to great technology tools and solutions is a vital part of enabling this way of working now and into the future. Yet, equally as important is the experience of being a remote worker and addressing the challenges associated with creating a strong sense of belonging and inclusion in the virtual workplace.
This webinar will share insights from a recent global research study on inclusive remote work and will offer practical tips for what works. Additionally, a case study from Citrix outlining how they have created an inclusive environment for distributed teams to heighten engagement, inclusion, belonging, retention and productivity will be shared during the webinar.

REPORT FROM PAKISTAN
DIVERSITY HUB-HR METRICS
GDIB 2020 AWARD RECIPIENTS
|
|
Note from The Centre: Please look at what Diversity Hub-HR Metrics is doing – see link below. We believe that this process can be replicated by other organizations around the world. Many people find awards highly motivating…and publicizing them internally and externally helps increase the organization’s reputation as doing something positive to further the goals of D&I.
|
|
Diversity Hub-HR Metrics, led by GDIB EP and The Centre Board member,
Zahid Mubarik
, announces its annual GDIB Awards. 19 leading multinational and national organizations participated. The Centre is especially grateful for the outstanding work that Diversity Hub-HR Metrics is doing with the GDIB in the forefront. As this issue goes to press, a webinar attended by 32 CEOs in Pakistan was facilitated by EPs
Duncan Smith
,
Lynda White
, and Zahid Mubarik. The February newsletter will contain more information about the learning highlights of that webinar.
