Picture opening the door to a tiny trailer and being overpowered by the smells, sounds, and sights of 153 animals in cages. Squawking birds. Sugar gliders running loose. Dogs barking. Cats meowing. The scent of stale pee burning the eyes. And fleas jumping from the carpet as you walk.
Our team arrived at this scene yesterday, when WCHS joined multiple agencies to help 153 animals. WCHS's Dr. Cote and vet assistant/feline care manager Hayley spent all day pulling animals out of their cages, giving them shots, looking for injuries, and administering flea medication, all before loading them into vans bound for area shelters.
Sixteen dogs and two sphinx cats returned to WCHS that night.
Within hours, one of the dogs gave birth to six tiny puppies!
