Hi Steve,

Doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result finally paid off for Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the new Speaker of the House. I'll leave it to you to decide who's insane, but last week's circus confirmed that the GOP, not Congress, is dysfunctional. The bargains McCarthy made to get his dream job and the agenda he will pursue prove that the GOP is not serious about solving our country's problems and will not govern responsibly--and the nation will soon pay the price. Aside from Senate confirmation of judges, the progress we need is on hold for two years--all for lack of five more House wins.

I started this newsletter in 2006 to combat misinformation about a congressional election in my district. Since then, the newsletter has grown in scope and circulation but the premise has not changed: Elections matter, issues matter, facts matter, and we matter.

I hope you find these newsletters worth your time. Thanks to you, Steve, the distribution list grows every week. Please keep sharing the newsletter and encouraging your friends to sign up.

I spend money as well as time to send this out because the size of the list requires me to use a commercial email service. So only once a year, I send this short reminder to ask that you help defray costs if you can.

Ideally, I'd send this on a Sunday when nothing important happened the week before, but that week never comes. However, I guarantee you that something will happen next week too.

If you've recently contributed, thank you, and thanks to everyone for your generosity over the years.

If you want to chip in (again) this year, please click here and fill in the amount of your choice. You can donate $1,800, $500, $180, $54, $18, or any amount you choose--no amount is too large or too small. Every dollar helps. I'm a one-person operation that depends on the support of its readers (that's you, Steve).

PayPal processes the transaction but you don't need a PayPal account. The link gives you a choice of using PayPal or your credit card. Just fill in the amount you want to donate and choose PayPal or a credit card. It's that easy.

When you click the link, the cursor will be on the amount you want to give. Just start typing the amount (rather than trying to first delete the zeros). Then select PayPal or credit/debit card by clicking the appropriate button, and then fill in the PayPal or credit/debit card information. The whole process takes less than a minute.

If you prefer, you can Venmo @steven-sheffey (the last four digits of my phone number, if it asks, are 9479). That works too.

If you'd rather send a check, please reply to this email and I'll send you mailing information (please do not send checks to the PO Box).

You don't have to chip in if you don't want to. How's that for a savvy fundraising pitch? If you can't contribute, if you don't want to contribute, if you hate the newsletter, if you are a relatively new subscriber, or if you or a loved one is going through a hard time, then of course no donation is expected and no questions will be asked. I will always send the newsletter to whoever wants it regardless of whether they contribute.

But if you get something out of the newsletter, and if you can contribute, please consider giving something back.

With your help, we can continue to combat fake news and faulty reasoning with hard facts and sound thinking. Please click here to donate.

Look for the regular newsletter bright and early next Sunday.

Thank you for your kindness and your support.

Sincerely,

Steve Sheffey

The Fine Print: This newsletter usually drops on Sunday mornings. Unless stated otherwise, the views expressed herein do not necessarily reflect the views of any candidates or organizations I support or am associated with. I value intellectual honesty over intellectual consistency, and every sentence should be read as if it began with the words "This is what I think today is most likely to be correct and I'm willing to be proven wrong, but..." Read views opposed to mine and make up your own mind. A link to an article doesn't mean I agree with everything its author has ever said or even that I agree with everything in the article; it means that the article supports or elaborates on the point I was making. I read and encourage replies to my newsletters but I don't always have the time to acknowledge them or engage in one-on-one discussion. I'm happy to read anything, but please don't expect me to watch videos of any length--send me a transcript if it's that important. Don't expect a reply if your message is uncivil or if it's clear from your message that you only read the bullet points or failed to click on the relevant links.
