STORRS, CT, October 2, 2023 – Sustainable CT is thrilled to announce the City of New Haven as the first recipient of Gold certification. The city earned over 1,000 points towards certification and was nominated for 18 “success story” awards. These success stories include the creation of New Haven’s Cultural Equity Plan and the Homeless Navigation Hub Continuum.
Sustainable CT is also excited to announce that the following towns have earned Silver certification this year: Bristol, Chester, Hamden, Middletown, and Old Saybrook. Sustainable CT also applauds Bolton, Branford, Clinton, Granby, Marlborough, Montville, Stonington, Trumbull, Winchester, and Windham for achieving Bronze certification.
Sustainable CT congratulates Guilford, Hartford, Litchfield, Manchester, New Haven, and Portland for each earning Climate Leader Designation. We've just finished this year's certification cycle (congratulations, 2023 certified towns!), so now it's time to sit back, relax, and take it easy, right? Heck, no. It's on to 2024! For our next Coffee Hour, we'll be sharing new actions and revisions for the coming year and providing an opportunity for attendees to share their feedback on proposed program changes. We really want to hear from our municipal partners and friends for this, so please join us.

Join us for a conversation about equity
Join Sustainable CT Equity Coaches for “Equity Connections” – regular opportunities to share your questions about equity actions, challenges, successes, or just listen to the conversation, and get ideas on how to approach or deepen your equity work. Municipal officials, staff, and Sustainability Team members are welcome to join the Sustainable CT team for these new bi-monthly virtual sharing sessions. Your registration covers any of the sessions we currently have scheduled, so come to any (or all) that you would like!

October's IMPACT: New Haven Strikes Gold
The Elm City becomes our first Gold-certified municipality
We catch up with Steve Winter, New Haven's Executive Director of Climate & Sustainability, to talk about all that glitters in the Elm City... well, all things sustainable anyway. New Haven is the first municipality in Connecticut to achieve Sustainable CT's Gold level certification. We talk about how they did it, what it means, and how the City's efforts can help the whole state shine.
Be sure to celebrate New Haven, and the achievements of all our 2023 certified communities, at Sustainable CT's 2023 Awards Celebration at the American Mural Project in Winsted on October 17.

Compost for the Community
Compost never sleeps - and neither does the newly Gold certified City of New Haven. Our Community Match Fund spotlight this month is on the Elm City's "Compost for the Community - Expand our Composting Program." They're raising funds to expand Common Ground's Composting Program to provide education and awareness to drive increased participation in food waste recycling efforts. No Cost Community Resilience Workshops Available to Sustainable CT Registered Communities Through the Nature Conservancy
Sustainable CT has partnered with the Nature Conservancy to offer no cost Community Resilience Building Workshops to communities across the state. By participating in a Community Resilience Building (CRB) Workshop, your city or town will satisfy the requirements for two Sustainable CT actions: Assess Climate Vulnerability and Implement Your Own Sustainability Action (for undertaking community resilience planning). CRB Workshops will take place before April, 2024.

Connecticut Main Street Center is launching the Main Street Accelerator, a virtual, 6-month program where participants learn and practice the nationally proven Four Point Main Street Approach and apply it to a specific challenge their community is facing.

Middletown Moves Forward with New Food Scrap Co-collection Program
The Middletown Common Council voted unanimously for the nation’s first co-collection program with unit based pricing. The program is expected to reduce residential trash disposal tonnage by 55%. The vote was the culmination of a 9-month pilot program sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).

The Yale Program on Climate Change Communications released a new report, Climate Change in the American Mind: Climate Justice, based on data from the nationally representative survey conducted in the spring of 2023. Among its findings, 53% of Americans support climate justice.

People's Action for Clean Energy (PACE), a leading advocate for renewable energy solutions, announced the release of its highly anticipated 2023 Solar on Connecticut Schools Report. The data reveals that the total solar capacity of Connecticut schools has more than tripled over the last five years.

Connecticut Public’s original series Re:source:ful: Growing Sustainable Communities features people across Connecticut using grassroots efforts to solve unique local challenges. The fourth season features Sustainable CT Community Match Fund projects confronting the challenge of waste management. By raising awareness through programs about food recovery, school lunch waste, recycling, repairs and food scrap management, these residents hope to change minds around everyday consumer habits.
