Beam for Innovation Building 1 Ready for Signatures
Construction of the anchor building at the16 Tech Innovation District will reach its maximum height on July 11, a milestone that will be commemorated at a "topping out" ceremony where the final steel beam will be hoisted atop the building with a small evergreen tree, an Indianapolis city flag and the American flag.

Before the July topping out ceremony, the steel beam will be covered with signatures and well-wishes from neighbors, tenants, partners and community stakeholders - the result of a month-long beam-signing campaign that launched on May 31 at the 16 Tech Quarterly Community Meeting and continues through June.

Developers of the first building at 16 Tech, Browning and Davis & Associates, are spearheading the beam-signing and will transport the 10-foot-long steel beam to June community meetings in the Near West, Near Northwest and surrounding neighborhoods. The beam will also be available during events with Innovation Building 1 tenants, city leaders, development and employment partners and other stakeholders.

Innovation Building 1 is the first new construction at 16 Tech and will be home to the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute, Indiana University School of Medicine researchers, and Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP) and its advanced industry initiatives, including Ascend Indiana, AgriNovus Indiana, BioCrossroads, Conexus Indiana, Energy Systems Network and TechPoint.
The final steel beam for Innovation Building 1 was on display at the 16 Tech Quarterly Community Meeting on May 31.

Topping Out Fun Facts

Topping out ceremonies are long-held traditions, the origin and meaning of which vary depending on whom you ask. Generally, the tree atop the steel beam is recognized as bringing life to the building, and the flags demonstrate the pride of the construction team. Regardless of the origin, topping out ceremonies have come to symbolize good luck for future occupants and celebrate the hard work of the development team.

For the 16 Tech project, the topping out ceremony also recognizes the hundreds of local stakeholders who have envisioned and are developing the16 Tech Innovation District as a community where innovators, entrepreneurs and companies connect and collaborate, laying the foundation for groundbreaking discoveries.
