17th Street Closure Notice

A note from the K9 Committee:

For reasons of safety and security, the HCC K-9 Committee, staff and board find it necessary to end day-to-day access to the Cemetery through the 17th Street gate, effective Monday, April 27th.  A year long project to replace a major water main along that road is to begin shortly.

However, having a "secret code" for the lock on that gate that is known to dog-walkers and select others is a policy that is simply no longer sustainable. The lock has been left unsecured and/or removed repeatedly, and that gate has become a common point of egress for individuals and their dogs who are not authorized to be on the grounds. An increasing number of minor incidents have resulted.

The Cemetery strives daily to strike the correct balance between fostering an open, welcoming feel for our property, and having appropriate security measures in place for the well-being of all of our visitors. We therefore will never implement the draconian set of policies it would take to bring the number of problems to zero.

However, it would be irresponsible to ignore the fact that closing the 17th Street gate is a common-sense step that will materially help the situation.

We regret that this will inconvenience a number of our longtime guests, but walking around to the front gate is a small price to pay for greater peace of mind for our broader community. We thank you in advance for your understanding.
