SC State PSA celebrates our dedicated staff members

Hemanth Dakshinamurty is advancing ag innovation at SC State Public Service & Agriculture by developing cutting-edge technologies that help producers make informed, data-driven decisions while improving water management and precision agriculture practices.


As a research scientist, Dakshinamurty focuses on precision agriculture, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based sensing, soil moisture monitoring, hydrology and applied artificial intelligence for agricultural decision-making. His research combines advanced sensors, drones, field experiments, data analytics and machine learning to develop practical, field-ready solutions that support small-scale farmers across South Carolina and beyond.


Dakshinamurty leads and contributes to innovative research initiatives designed to improve irrigation management, water resource monitoring and environmental sustainability. His work includes developing an autonomous UAV payload for near-surface soil moisture measurement, using UAV hyperspectral imaging for soil moisture retrieval, and advancing weather and soil monitoring systems at the 1890 Research & Demonstration Farm in Olar, SC. He also conducts remote sensing research that supports agricultural production and environmental applications.


His commitment to innovation extends beyond the laboratory through collaborative research and grant development. Dakshinamurty recently contributed to securing a $499,328 USDA 1890 capacity-building grant to support agricultural research and education. He also submitted a $100,000 proposal to develop a universal, low-cost soil moisture sensing payload that can be mounted on existing farm vehicles, making precision agriculture technologies more accessible to producers.


Dakshinamurty's research continues to gain national recognition. His recent publication, "A Regression-Based Waveform Interpretation Model for Accurate Soil Moisture Estimation under Incomplete TDR Probe Insertions," appeared in Vadose Zone Journal. He has also presented his work at the 2026 Association of 1890 Research Directors Research Symposium in New Orleans, La., and the 2026 National Soil Moisture Workshop in Asheville, NC, sharing innovations that advance agricultural and environmental sciences.


Beyond research, Dakshinamurty is committed to preparing the next generation of agricultural scientists. During the 2026 summer research program, he mentored three students through field data collection, experimental design, sensor development, data analysis and research presentations. He also supports efforts to expand artificial intelligence literacy while helping students build practical skills in computing, software applications and emerging technologies.


Through his leadership in precision agriculture, applied artificial intelligence and student mentorship, Dakshinamurty continues to advance SC State Public Service & Agriculture's mission of delivering innovative research, expanding educational opportunities and strengthening agricultural communities across South Carolina.
