Murshid SAM tells us, “Love and self-sacrifice become real when realized!” and that “Life and Spirituality are one.” For SAM ‘doing good’ is not a moral duty but a natural overflow of divine energy. When the heart is filled with baraka, that energy radiates as compassion, justice, service, and joy. It may seem radical, but the Dalai Lama has said, “Peace will not come through our prayer. Peace must come through our Action.” As we transform ourselves through our practices, our actions will reflect that light and that love. Because we are relational and contingent beings, we are responsible, through our words and actions, for the kind of self we bring into being, and by extension the world we live in.
Jane Goodall used to tell us that the best way to overcome hopelessness and helplessness is to “just get involved”. David Attenborough tells us “What happens next is up to every one of us.” This is what Hazrat Inayat Khan also taught us when he said “Man forms his future by his actions.”
Gretta Thunberg reminds us, “All of us can do something. We can change the way we farm, the way we eat, the way we treat Nature.” Then she adds, “What will you do?”
And American, Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield says that now is the time, “Whatever your political perspective, now is the season to stand up for what matters. To stand against hate. To stand for respect. To stand for protection of the vulnerable. To care for the natural world.”
