"The All-Union Agricultural Exhibition can justifiably be considered one of the brightest examples of Stalinist architecture. Originally opened in 1939, then rebuilt and reopened in 1954, the exhibition was again transformed in 1958 into its late-Soviet incarnation...(T)he exhibition was designed to use the imagery of abundance to bring real abundance into being." Opening in Moscow on August 1, 1939 (see above), the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition featured multiple pavilions representing all eleven republics at the time and the achievements of collective farming and related subjects.
Numerous photo albums chronicling the exhibition were published through 1941. Designers for these albums included El Lissitzky, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Solomon Telingater, Nikolai Sedel'nikov, Nikolai Troshin, Aleksandr Zhitomirsky and Boris Klinch.
These albums were printed in small editions, generally in the 3,000 to 5,000 range and were typically held by former USSR institutions during the Soviet period.
We believe this archive of 35 albums is a complete collection of those published. (Reference for some of these albums can be found at Karasik, M.; Heiting, M., ed. 2015. The Soviet Photobook 1920-1941 at 506-49. Steidl.)
The albums offered here are organized alphabetically below, first by those representing the eleven republics then existing and next those demonstrating agricultural accomplishments.
