The 1928 Boeing 40C now calls
 WAAAM home.

Addison Pemberton, our newest member of the WAAAM board, has donated the 1928 Boeing 40C to the museum.
Beautiful Boeing 40B arrives at WAAAM

Pemberton had this to say.." This Boeing 40 is the culmination of a 35+ year dream for Addison. He spent 20 years dreaming and researching before finding this project in 2000. From 2000-2008, we (along with 70+ volunteers) invested approximately 18,000 man hours into restoring it. Since its first flight on Feb 17, 2008, we have put nearly 800 hours on it. We have flown it from New York to San Fransisco, retracing the CAM 18 airmail route. We have flown in formation with Boeing's prototype 787 "Dreamliner" at 14,000 ft over the Cascade Mountains. We have given rides to nearly 1,000 people. We have taken it to virtually every major fly-in in the nation and tried to share it with as many people as possible. Today, we are passing that job on to the fine people at WAAAM. They share our love of vintage airplanes and the remarkable technology and efforts that they represent. As with the majority of the airplanes at WAAAM, the Boeing will remain airworthy and will fly occasionally for special occasions.

"The Boeing 40 represents the 'missing link' between mail planes and airliners. It was Boeing's first airliner and, according to Bill Boeing Jr, was the airplane that saved his father's company and kept it from bankruptcy. It represents a time where pilots believed that they must feel the wind to safely operate an aircraft. Today, WAAAM's Boeing 40C, SN: 1043 is one of three remaining Boeing 40's in the world and is the only airworthy example. It remains the oldest airworthy Boeing aircraft in the world."

While most really cool old airplanes don't have keys both Museum Founder Terry Brand and donor Addison Pemberton decided to have some fun by reenacting an official keys hand-off photo.

Aircraft Restoration Shop News

This month has been very busy in the Aircraft Restoration Shop with our many projects and
hard working volunteers.
Our biggest update -  we got started on the restoration of WAAAM's St Louis Cardinal!
(See the 3 pictures above.)

This is a very unique aircraft with a one-piece wing and 90HP LaBlonde 7-cylinder engine.
All of the structure of this airplane is in great shape so it will definitely be flying again by spring.

Another very exciting announcement is that WAAAM has acquired the only remaining
St. Louis YPT-15. (Built by the same company as the Cardinal.)

As a biplane with an all metal fuselage and fabric covered metal wings it is quite the unusual bird.
It is now in Hanger H1 awaiting restoration.

Visitors can see it during our shop tours on Second Saturday October 14 at 11am and 1pm.

WAAAM Car Guys

September was a mad rush to get ready for WAAAMs 10th Anniversary and Fly in.
Our 1917 King 8 was already ready to go...

but the 1917 Model-T Army Ambulance needed
a new radiator, rear tires, brakes, and a number of "fix it" items. It was completed on time, and safe
to give rides during the Fly in. Thanks to Don Ferency for making the Ambulance road ready.

September 7, Samantha Brown, AKA "Travel Goddess" and show hostess on the Travel Channel, along with her family and production staff, spent 5 hours at WAAAM filming  for her new 2018 show, to be aired on PBS.  Steve Roberts taught Samantha how to drive our 1923 Model-T Touring car,
which she thoroughly enjoyed.

The Gorge fire was a major factor in the small number of aircraft able to make the Fly-In.  The smoke was terrible. However, the  Car Guys had
no issues this year with parking with Steve  Robert's new signs.  Our crew of Cal Cargill, Robert Smithwick, Andy Anderson, Don Ferency, Steve Roberts, Rick Uskoski, Chris Heald, Gene Wright and Dale Nicol handled the parking and  then gave car rides Friday, Saturday and Sunday  f or a total of about 18 hours.

We fielded the 1917 King (pictured at the top of
this article), 1914 Model-T Ford Depot Hack, '31 Ford Model-A Roadster, '31 Chevy Phaeton and 1917 Model-T Army Ambulance. The Ambulance was a big hit because the exhaust sounded like "chitty-chitty-bang-bang".  Don Ferency had  many happy riders on board!

Mike McGuire and Robert Smithwick finished installing the new vinyl top to our 1928 Studebaker.  It looks first rate. Robert has been working on completing the interior pieces.

September 11 was International Model-A Day. A large group from the Portland Alfa Car Club arrived and spent time admiring our Model-A's fielded near the Gazebo.

The 1942 Willys Americar is having the  mechanical and electrical systems restored.  Chris Heald, Don Ferency, Paige Myers and David Castillo have been making good progress. Paige  was able to set up and operate our new (old-used) brake drum lathe machine and resurface all 4  drums.

This past month the Car Guys provided car rides
for the Columbia Cruise boat people/guests, Fly In and another Learn How to Drive a Model-T Class.
Thanks to all of the WAAAM Car Guys Volunteers for helping this past month:

The Car Guys need volunteers who like doing
basic auto maintenance, upholstery, wood  or
metal body repair, fabrication, electrical, mechanical, grant writing, as well as car ride d rivers and hosts to load  and unload guests.

Issue 10 2017
2017 Fly-In Report

Despite the weather caused by the nearby fires the 2017 Annual Hood River Fly-In went on as planned. The visibility wasn't very good but we still had a handful of pilots make it to our event in their airplanes.

This intrepid pilot gets the award for flying the farthest to get to the Fly-In and 10th Anniversary of WAAAM.  He came all the way from New York!

A few others tried to make it but wound up having to drive all or part of the way to help us celebrate our 10 year anniversary.

It was quite the part y and even did all right as a fundraiser, too.

Thanks to all our volunteers, sponsors, supporters, donors, and visitors who helped us pull it off!

One of the highlights of the Fly-In for us was getting our OX-5 powered airplanes out and about. We tested them the week leading up and then had a fantastic time of flying them around on Sunday morning.

WAAAM's 1917 Curtiss Jenny, 1925 WACO Nine, 1927 Swallow, and 1929 Command Aire looked awesome.

We love history in action!

WAAAM has two new Board members!

Welcome to our two new board members who joined our team during the Fly-In -

Addison Pemberton

and Ron Wade

We are very glad to have them on board, helping the rest of our crew to strive for greatness.

WAAAM's collection also made headlines in Warbird Digest with a feature article on our WWII TG-6 and TG-8 gliders! We flew these birds back in May and the photographer got some excellent shots and the write up really gets you in the know about what's so neat about these rare gliders.
