Where Were You on July 20, 1969?

This weekend we celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of Apollo 11 and the first man landing on the moon. Where were you on July 20, 1969? 

I was nine years old and literally in the middle of America in Topeka, Kansas. My mother had taken my siblings and me on a cross-country trip in our Volkswagen Bus (with stick on flowers!) and we stopped in Topeka to visit family friends. I remember all of us crowding around the tv, which I am sure was black and white and no bigger than 25 inches, and silently watched Neil Armstrong first step on the lunar surface. 

It was definitely one of those “you will always remember where you were when……” moments. Send us your lunar landing story or share on our Facebook page.

Looking for House Tour Volunteers
This fall the Haddam Historical Society is hosting a host a house tour on October 5, 2019 and are looking for volunteers to docent, park cars and general help. If you are interested in working with us please email the office at contact@haddamhistory.org or give us a call at 860-345-2400. 

Still need watering volunteers for Arnold House Garden

Please consider helping out with watering the garden at the museum this summer. Our site has been designated as one of Connecticut’s Historic Gardens and we get many visitors from the region who come just to enjoy the gardens. We are asking for a week long commitment and water as necessary depending on the weather. Pots under the arbor do require daily watering if it does not rain. Rest of the summer is open. Spencer’s Haddam Shad Shack
For the past month a group of volunteers has been working on the iconic Spencer’s Shad Shack along Route 154. So far, they have removed overgrowth, faux roof, and deteriorated portions of the building.

Thank you to Rob Bradway and Connecticut Valley Railroad for removing a dead tree that hung over the building and a big shout out to John and James Carlson of
Pete’s Waste Removal of Haddam for loaning a dumpster. Also thank you to Lorne Goralnik of Lyon & Billard Lumber of Berlin for donating plywood as well as Rod Auclair and Jan Sweet.

If you are interested in helping out, they meet Saturday mornings from 9 to 12 noon. (NOT JULY 20 DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT)

Annual Appeal
Our 2019 Annual Appeal letter has been mailed and we hope that you will support the Haddam Historical Society and its programs, collections, museum and gardens.

This year two of our members have stepped forward with a Challenge Grant of $300 in support of annual appeal campaign. If you are a new member, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar.
