Message from Pastor Jon
Dear Members and Friends of Ark and Dove,

Gratitude leads to happiness, not necessarily the other way around. This is widely agreed upon by many, from religious gurus to researchers. For this reason, people take on gratitude challenges (posting on social media things for which they are grateful) or end an evening listing thanksgivings from the day in a journal. Life circumstances don't always beget gratitude, but gratitude can improve life circumstances.

Thankfulness can also make us more generous. Researchers Michael McCullough and Jo-Ann Tsang found the following in studying gratitude: People with a strong disposition toward gratitude have the capacity to be empathetic and to take the perspective of others. It turns out that thanksgiving can help us in those difficult conversations that often occur around Thanksgiving tables.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to concentrate on gratitude for a day. It would be more wonderful if we could make it a concentration of our daily lives. Maybe we would be more generous in giving, empathetic in understanding, and helpful in effort. It is all too easy for us to move from Thanks giving to getting, in the Christmas season. That is why the Advent season is ever important. It begins this Sunday. In Advent, we watch and wait for the gift(s) of God in Christ. It is time to gratefully anticipate, that we might be truly thankful on Christmas morn. I invite you to worship this Advent as we light candles, praying O Come, O Come Emmanuel.

There are great opportunities to give this Advent and Christmas season. Please participate in #GivingTuesday and support ministry and mission at Ark and Dove or the Christmas Joy offering.

I pray you have a happy, a truly happy Thanksgiving.

Verse and Prayer
Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
-Matthew 24:42

Keep us alert, O God, for you come to us in many ways. In the grace of a new day, the love of the beloved, the plea of the poor, the comfort of a friend, the gesture of a stranger, the sacred and secular word, the challenges, the encouragements, the still silence, and the unexpected--in many ways, you come to us. May we receive you and your Word to us, this day and in those to come. Amen.
Advent is here and Christmas is coming! The choir is pleased to present Ruth Elaine Schram's anthem, We Wait, with Charlotte Yeager on cello. We are so blessed to have such an abundance of musical talent at Ark and Dove. We're also looking forward to sharing more of that talent on December 8 at 6pm with our Christmas Revels concert. Come one and all to enjoy music, readings and some tasty treats!

Ark and Dove's pageant takes place on December 15, during the 9:30 service. If you haven't had a chance yet, here's the link to sign up: pageant sign-up!

I'm looking forward to each and every one of these events, and hope to see you there, as you let your light shine!

Director of Music
Advent has arrived! There is no better way to prepare for the birth of our Messiah than attending services and our special events. Christmas Revels concert will be held on Sunday, December 8, 6pm. There will be holiday songs performed by members of the choir, band, and other members of the congregation. The Christmas Pageant will occur during the 9:30 am service on Sunday December 15. As usual, our church youth will be taking the lead in the pageant to tell the nativity story. Please attend all these events, so we can prepare for the birth of Jesus, and appreciate the work that has gone into preparing these services.

God bless,

- James 1:17
Please support the Christmas Joy offering during Advent. Are you looking for a meaningful way to participate in Advent, the time in the church calendar leading up to Christmas? Are you weary of the commercialism that dominates this season in our culture? The remedy could be supporting the Christmas Joy special offering , now through December 24.
What is the Christmas Joy offering? The Presbyterian Church, USA has 4 special offerings that are collected throughout the year that benefit different programs and causes, within the PCUSA, as well as our local congregation. The Christmas Joy offering will support the following endeavors:

It's easy to give to the Christmas Joy offering . You may use the special envelopes that can be found throughout the sanctuary; designate "Christmas Joy" on your check; or donate securely through our website. When you give to the Christmas Joy offering , you not only provide financial support to important programs, but you also take a step towards refocusing on what is really meaningful about Christmas! The Ark & Dove mission ministry is participating again in the Christmas Holiday Sharing Program organized by the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services Sign-ups for gift-giving and delivery in the lobby! Through this partnership we share some of our blessings and provide Christmas gifts to families in our community. This year the Holiday Sharing office matched us with 38 families (86 children). We will purchase a clothing item and another gift for each child and then deliver to the families after the 11:00 service on December 15 (other arrangements can be made).   For more information, to sign up between Sundays, or to volunteer to help, contact Greg Makar (301-483-8255,
CAP Food Pantry Volunteer Need
CAP is the Christian Assistance Program, Inc., a group of about 13 churches, including Ark & Dove, that provides food and clothing to families in West Anne Arundel County. Ark & Dove helps sustain CAP through regular food donations, clothing donations, the annual Souper Bowl of Caring, and volunteers for CAP activities. CAP operates a food pantry at Severn United Methodist Church and needs volunteers to help carry food from the pantry to the clients’ cars. The pantry is open Tuesdays (11am-1pm) and Thursdays (3-5pm). Help is needed both days, but more on Thursdays and especially the fourth Thursday of the month. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Greg Makar (, 301-483-8255).
