a message from the principal
Dear Saxon Families:

As I write, we are all experiencing the grief from  the loss of a classmate, friend, relative, student. The death  of sophomore  James Chen is traumatic and painful for all of us. In the midst of our grief, I have been able to witness great empathy and kindness from our community. The McLean principal called me on Sunday to offer their support. Many of our teachers have mourned along with their students the loss of a bright, engaged, talented young man.

At our game with McLean on Tuesday night, our SGA President Marina Smith and Vice President Olivia Augustini, along with the McLean SGA President, reminded us that though we are two schools, we are one community. After the game Marina and Olivia led the entire gym in a short remembrance where everyone lit their phones while music played. Thank you to both teams for remaining and participating in such an uplifting ceremony.

Although any death diminishes us, I am so proud of our students in their response. Our Leadership class cancelled the pep rally because they didn't think it would be appropriate. The students have created a beautiful memorial outside the band room in Langley Hall; the rock has been painted in James's honor. And as we move forward, please continue to keep James and his family and friends in your thoughts. Remember that tomorrow isn't promised to anyone; we must appreciate what we have and what we do today.

As we return to a normal routine, even weeks from now, your child could still be working through the tragedy. All people, and especially children, grieve in their own way, particularly in the face of a sudden death. For further insight, the link here is a resource for parents helping children deal with grief. Please remember that all LHS administrators are here for help and support -- just reach out to us any time.
