Congratulations AMHS National Merit Scholarship Finalists!

AMHS announced last week that 17 seniors have become finalists for a National Merit Scholarship. Read the full release at this link.

The following AMHS seniors are 2024 Finalists:


Andrew Angermeier, Eliza Compton, Harry Ding, Nicholas Edwards, Colin George, Campbell Lesher, Cliffie Manuel, John McQueen, Jacob Olinger, Jessie Ross, Scarlet Rutter, Rutledge Sander, Tommy Sasser, Caroline Spann, Maryn Tombs, Emerson Wiseman, and Kabir Zaman.


From April to July of this year, the 2024 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced. Finalists have the opportunity to win one of three types of National Merit Scholarships: a $2500 Scholarship as a state awardee, a corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship award, or a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship.

Welcome, Ms. Colvin!

AMHS is delighted to welcome Ginger Colvin to the Bonds Wilson Campus as the new receptionist for Academic Magnet High School and Charleston County School of the Arts.


Asked about her thoughts in her new position Ms. Colvin said, “I am excited to be a part of the Academic Magnet / School of the Arts community and I look forward to being a source of support to families, students, and staff.” Read the full announcement at this link.

AMHS featured in District Video About AP African American Studies Pilot Curriculum Program

AP African American Studies in first year at AMHS

The Charleston County School District shared a video last week featuring the AP African American Studies course currently being offered for the first year at AMHS. Through a pilot curriculum program for students interested in studying the diversity of Black communities in the United States, students can immerse themselves in a broader context of Africa through this course, currently only offered in CCSD at AMHS and Wando High School. Mr. Williams is the instructor at AMHS. The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund is accepting applications for the 2024-25 school year! Any student who meets the five straightforward eligibility criteria qualifies for the scholarship. Essays or letters of recommendation are not required, and every student who qualifies WILL receive a scholarship.


The first application deadline was Friday, Jan. 19, but there are four additional application deadlines this spring. Please contact the fund team if you have any questions and feel free to share this with anyone who might benefit from the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund. AMHS and the National Honor Society (NHS) are proud to announce that Harry Ding '24 has been selected as an NHS Scholarship Finalist - the first NHS scholarship finalist in the school’s history. On Friday, six members of the Men's Varsity Wrestling team qualified for the SCHSL Individual Wrestling Championships through the Lower State tournament. Congratulations to Lincoln Boucher, Nick Severance, John Napolitano, Lawton Harper, Cy Benich, and Armando Reyes and best of luck to them in their next competition!

Dr. Altman and Mr. McCormick have organized an amazing trip through Italy for Spring Break in 2025!

The Young Filmmakers Project, an annual statewide filmmaking competition offered by the SC Film Commission and Trident Tech, is now open to all high school and middle school students in South Carolina. Deadline for entries is midnight on March 18, 2024.

Spend Spring Break 2025 in Costa Rica! Raptors are invited to consider this amazing opportunity to explore the ecology of Costa Rica during spring break of 2025. Students will conduct research on leatherback sea turtles AND earn 30 hours of community service. Email Ms. Phillips ([email protected]) with any questions.

Black History Month Essay Contest

The Cynthia Graham Hurd/St. Andrews Library is sponsoring their annual Black History Essay Contest, which is open to all Charleston-area students in grades 6 through 12. Winners will receive a trophy and $50 Amazon gift card. Learn more.

Opportunity for the Class of '27!

Kids On Point is teaming up with Charleston Civil Rights and Civics (C3) for the second year to offer an immersive civil rights experience for high school students completing their freshman year. This year's session is scheduled from June 24 to June 28, 2024. Students will explore key sites in the Lowcountry, delving into our region's history of slavery and civil rights. The program will conclude at the Charleston Board of Elections, emphasizing the importance of the election process, voter registration, and will feature a special graduation ceremony.


This week-long experience is entirely free, with transportation and all expenses covered. Learn more and register at this link. Also visit the Kids On Point website, and check out last year's program in this video.

New Year Discount - $200 off registration! There are still a couple spots open for AMHS students. Join us for an unforgettable 2 weeks in Spain where we will visit and explore Madrid, Sevilla, Malaga and Toledo. Teenagers who want to increase their Spanish skills, looking at minoring or majoring in Spanish or just interested in going with a group of friends this program is for you. 

Each student will stay with a host family and siblings while we are in Madrid and then stay in hostels as we travel south to the other cities. You will indulge in traditional Spanish cuisine, see all the must see sights in the capital and other major cities, attend Spanish classes at a local Spanish school as well as master the Escape Room, zip line through the outskirts of Madrid, visit one of the most beautiful beaches in Malaga, explore an underground cave called, “la cueva del Tesoro,” and so much more. REMINDER: 30 Hours of Community Service due by May 1

Parents and students are reminded that all AMHS students should be working toward their 30 hours of community service which will be due on May 1st. Community Service forms are available on the class canvas pages and all of our Study Hall teachers can answer questions about this important school-wide program.

Volunteers are needed for the HALOS Oyster Roast on February 25. All proceeds from the event will be used to promote safe and nurturing homes for children in kinship care. The event takes place at Harborside East 28 Bridgeside Blvd. Mount Pleasant SC 29464. Volunteers who want to also attend the Oyster Roast as a guest before or after their shift can purchase a discounted ticket for $20 by emailing [email protected].

Volunteers are needed for the Walk for Autism on April 27, 2024 from 7 am to 1:30 pm.  Any students wishing to volunteer can come for part of the hours or all. If interested in volunteering please contact Rose O'Neal at 843-553-1316 or [email protected]

 

Volunteers will assist in several tasks: setting up tables and tents; manning jump castles, food stations, silent auction tables, merchandise table, ticket sales and at the end of the event breaking down tables and tents along with clean up.

The Raptor Report is published weekly by AMHS PIE on Wednesdays during the school year except for holiday breaks.
