Tom Robinson is our Volunteer of the Week as well as our WPS Volunteer Awards Adult Award Runner-Up
When looking at a nonprofit, many of us may overlook the importance of facilities and maintenance. It is imperative for a nonprofit like Golden House to have a building that is safe for victims and survivors of domestic abuse. Tom Robinson has been filling that need as a long-term maintenance volunteer since 2007! Last year, Golden House sheltered nearly 500 men, women and children in their safe and secure shelter. Additionally, 1,200 individuals from the community sought services at Golden House. As a maintenance volunteer, Tom is in all areas of the facility. He is sensitive to the nature of the work done at Golden House and always puts the residents at ease. This is especially important for those who may have lost trust with men in their lives.
Back in 2007, Tom joined Golden House as a weekly volunteer who would do odd jobs around the facility. Tom has been a regular friendly face not only during his weekly Tuesday shift, but oftentimes on other days of the week when he comes back to finish a larger maintenance project. He is the staff’s “go to guy” for anything they need fixed throughout the building. Tom’s talents range from changing light bulbs to remodeling entire kitchens and bathrooms! Sometimes the staff wonders if he knew what he was getting himself into with this volunteer role. Tom brought with him to Golden House a wealth of knowledge in the building and contract business. To say that Tom goes above and beyond is an understatement.
He has made it known that he is there to do anything that needs to be done to make the environment safe and supportive for families fleeing violence. He definitely is someone who puts the needs of others before his own. There was a time that Golden House was struggling to meet client needs due to not having a running agency vehicle on hand. It put a strain on staff, as they were often unable to transport guests to important appointments or pick up children from school. One day, Tom showed up and said, “I bought a car for Golden House.” And he sure did his research to buy the most sound, reliable and economical car to fit the needs of Golden House.
Thank you, Tom, for going above and beyond in your volunteer role at Golden House!

Pals Program Mentors - Ongoing
Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) in a recreational or learning activity with a child, age 3 or older, that has been referred by Brown County Child Protective Services. Volunteer mentors help the child adjust to the separation or loss of a parent, enhance self-esteem and confidence, and learn new skills. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested or until the youth is eighteen. They currently have a lengthy waiting list of boys and girls ages 3-17. Need spotlight: They have two brothers, ages 6 and 9, on the far west side of Brown County, who are in need of a positive, consistent adult role model. The boys enjoy art, crafts, sports, being outside and love superheroes. They like movies, video games and playing with Legos and action figures. They are excited to learn about and try new things. They ask that volunteers meet with their match at least 2-3 times per month for 1-2 hours each time. Minimum age: 18.
