7th Annual 2011 Stagecoach Century
~~ and ~~
|Dear Sturdy Riders,
The "Lucky 7th" 2011 Stagecoach Century proved to be the best-ever weather! We're pleased to report a robust field of 693 Registered Riders from 15 states, plus Canada and the UK. Thanks to all for riding and spreading the word!
Be sure to read all the way to the bottom of this email. Ellsworth Bicycles held a drawing for a free set of Ellsworth wheels. The lucky winner's name is posted. Enjoy!
Among the 2011 Full Century Finishers was Dean Monti, all the way from Freeport, NY, Mark Yon from Mechanicsburg, PA, Dennis Kusturiss, from Bethel Park, PA, Cameron Frazer from the UK, along with Cyndie & Rick Fox from the warm city of Anchorage, AK. We realize the trail to Stagecoach is long for all riders; as your host, we offer our most sincere thanks for making the journey.
What a fantastic way to kick-off your New Year! Mother Nature smiled on this year's ride like no previous. Last week, rains soaked the desert. Then yesterday (Mon), Jimmy Ray called from Ocotillo to say it was 91F. This makes 4 years in a row of mild temps/winds at Stagecoach. The high on Sat was 79F, low of 46F. The morning chill was the shortest ever. NNE winds were mild, gusting to 8 MPH. Nonetheless, our "Cruel Friend, Wind" reversed all along the Great Southern Overland and pestered riders in the P.M. It wouldn't be Stagecoach without at least one weather wild card!
Congratulations are in order for riders completing the full 100-mile course. There was a glitch at the Finish Line, so the final number will definitely rise. Currently, we have recorded 229 Full Century Finishers, click here to view the list. If you rode the full 100 miles and we missed you, or you did not check in, it's not too late. Please email Jim (click on name) with your Name and Bib # in the subject field and we'll update the list until we've got everyone. Only riders who registered for the Full Course are eligible.
The Full Century Finishers list included Shadow Tour's most sturdy riders, with each completing their 14th Shadow Tour event: Karen Finkelstein, Carlsbad, CA and Courtney Krehbiel, Carlsbad, CA.
Riders completing 8, or more, Shadow Tour events included: Amy Snyder, La Jolla, CA (12), Patricia Thomas, La Jolla, CA (11), Steve Seaman, La Quinta, CA (10), Dave Moser, Valley Center, CA (9), Natalie Fennel, Irvine, CA (9), Jim Corriere, Brawley, CA (8), Rex Farnsworth, Redondo Beach, CA (8), Martin Bernstein, Long Beach, CA (8), Bart Cruz, Redondo Beach, CA (8). Well done!
Many riders have sent complimentary and constructive emails, and posted to the Stagecoach Fanpage, praising the outstanding efforts of the loyal and hard-working vols. Lots also enjoyed the Chicken Noodle Soup in Shelter Valley. Some also enjoyed the sign: "Saddle Sore Rd". Others offered suggestions for improvement, such as better coordination of Finish Line operations. We will carefully consider all constructive suggestions. The vols from Ocotillo, led by Jimmy Ray Jones, and Shelter Valley, led by Ray Schmitz, enjoyed their vital roles anchoring both ends of the course. They take great pride and satisfaction in meeting/exceeding rider expectations.
In the Time Trial, Team Broadcom, in the Men 30+ Club TTT Division, blazed through the course in a record-setting time. They lowered the Division and Overall TTT Course Record with a fabulous time of 4:46:30. Team captain, Noah Hudson, 34, Todd Jacobs, 44, Shannon McGee, 36, and Vince Colf, 34, from Irvine, CA, earned a rare first-time victory at Stagecoach. Noah said the team enjoyed the widely varying scenery, even more than his rides in Death Valley. Check out the complete Time Trial results: Click here
In the Solo Division, Daniel McGehee, 48, Mesa, AZ defended his Division & Course Records by establish new records for both! Returning from a serious crash, requiring facial reconstruction surgery, just 3 months ago, Dan bravely attacked the course. Slight headwinds cut his average speed and increased his watt output in both directions. Riding slightly behind his previous splits made his return ride more stressful. With enormous effort, he reeled in the Course Record by less than a minute in 4:37:20. He then made good on his promise to this wife, Mary, to be home by 6:00 P.M. for dinner & movie. Congrats to Dan, a worthy Champion, and Gentleman.
Many newcomers to distance cycling participated at various distances on Saturday. Great job! We encourage you to participate in many more century rides as your riding base, experience, and confidence build. Regardless of final distance, or speed, each rider should be justifiably proud. Accepting the Stagecoach challenge takes some brass. When the soreness passes, you'll be left with the satisfaction of knowing you rode Stagecoach, when others were too intimidated. You handled the inconveniences, overcame the weather elements, rode smart, and were rewarded with a lasting memory. You may wear your Stagecoach Jerseys, T-shirts, Medals, and Pins with a sense of Pride & Swagger. YOU EARNED IT!
More happy memories are to be found in the smiles on riders faces. Armando from Sport Action Photos is hard at work right now on your photos. They expect to complete matching helmet #'s to photos by Wed or Thu. When complete, they'll email all riders. Here's a direct link to the Stagecoach Century on their website. Riders will have watermark options for the Date and Stagecoach Logos. Armando provided courtesy image photos for the Stagecoach website & Fanpage. If you downloaded them, please consider a modest donation. Armando & his crew were up at 3:00 A.M. and worked until the end. Crew member Alex even provided on-course mechanic support from his World Cycles pickup truck. As small business owners, they have no safety net in this brutal economy. We think you'll agree Armando's photos are simply outstanding.
