2011 WPFG Supporters:
Welcome to the July edition of the 2011 WPFG Newsletter. It is hard to believe that the Opening Ceremony will begin in less than 60 days! Needless to say, the 2011 WPFG Organizing Committee is hard at work finalizing all of the details to make your experience at the 2011 Games the best yet.
This month's newsletter includes information about the Opening Ceremony and the Candlelight Vigil. We are featuring eight of our New York City Parks locations, including Central Park - one of the most famous parks in the world.
The 2011 WPFG Organizing Committee is made up of a team of dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been working for the past several years to be ready for the more than 15,000 athletes coming to New York City. This month we highlight several of them and each has included a piece of advice for everyone coming to the Games.
Lastly, you will find additional information about creating your credentials. We cannot express how important it is that you complete your credentials as soon as possible. Our plan is to have your credentials ready when you come to accreditation at the Jacob Javits Center. For everyone who has uploaded their credentials, accreditation will be a breeze as you will be fast tracked. If you do not create your credentials ahead of time, you may face a long wait and miss out on many of the activities the 2011 WPFG and New York City has to offer. Remember - you must have your credentials to attend the Opening Ceremony!
We can't wait to welcome you to New York!

9/11 Candlelight Vigil
This year marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and in honor of those that were lost and those that made the Ultimate Sacrifice, the 2011 WPFG Organizing Committee will hold a Candlelight Vigil on September 5th.at 7pm. The Vigil will be held at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue, between 110th and 113th Streets, in New York City. The Vigil will focus on the themes of Honor, Remembrance and Gratitude. It will give us a chance to respectfully honor our promise to "Always Remember" our fallen brothers and sisters. It is important to note that all First Responders including 346 Firefighters, 37 Port Authority Officers, 23 NYC Police Officers, 3 NYS Officers, 1 Fire Patrol, and 1 K-9 Rescue dog named Sirus will be recognized together. We believe that this is the first time these agencies have shared in a memorial celebrating the heroic efforts made that day.
The Vigil is a closed event and only Credentialed Athletes and their Credentialed Guests will be able to attend. Seating is limited inside of the Cathedral as are the Standing Room Only areas. Access will be on a first come, first serve basis so get there early. An outside area on Amsterdam Avenue will be available for overflow guests equipped with a giant video screen and sound towers that will allow those outside to be a part of the ceremony.
Please join us in honoring all those who protect and serve...Come Celebrate Humanity through Sports.

2011 WPFG VENUES
In this month's newsletter, we will spotlight eight of the New York City Parks venues.
Central Park - Cycling - Road Race; Lawn Bowls
Arguably one of the most famous parks in the world, Central Park is a manmade wonder. Not only is it the first public park built in America, but it is also one of the most frequently visited, with over 35 million guests per year. In the heart of Manhattan, Central Park is 843 acres or 6% of Manhattan's total acreage and includes 7 bodies of water, 250 acres of lawn and 136 acres of woodland. In addition to the famous Great Lawn, which has been the venue for many concerts, including Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, Garth Brooks and Dave Matthews, Central Park is the finish line for the New York City Marathon.
When you are in New York City, be sure to include a visit to Central Park on your list of places to visit.
Kissena Park - Cycling - Velodrome
In Queens, Kissena Park is an ideal location to relax and participate in outdoor activities. Home to the historic tree grove, Kissena Park has dozens of species of trees and some of the trees are the most exotic in the world. The grove got its start as part of a 19th century horticultural nursery for the New York Region.
Known in the cycling community as the "track of dreams", the Kissena Velodrome is a 400-meter, state of the art track. In 1962, Robert Moses built the Kissena Velodrome and Kissena racers dominated the 1964 Olympic Trials at the Velodrome, taking five of the eight places on the US squad. 2011 WPFG athletes participating in the Velodrome will be riding on a track that has produced many Olympians and world-class cyclists.
Prospect Park - Opening Ceremony
Prospect Park is a 585-acre urban oasis located in the heart of Brooklyn. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, who also designed Central Park, Prospect Park features the 90-acre Long Meadow, the 60-acre Lake and Brooklyn's only forest. With over eight million visitors a year, the Park borders diverse neighborhoods and attracts both locals and tourists. Popular activities range for skating to bird watching to pedal boating. In addition to the Prospect Park Zoo, Prospect Park is also known as being the nation's first urban Audubon Center.
Participating in the Opening Ceremonies in this stunning park will be the perfect kick-off for the 2011 World Police & Fire Games.
Flushing Meadows Corona Park - Dragon Boat Racing
Flushing Meadows Corona Park is one of the greatest places in New York City. It has become the keystone park of Queens and a recreation and cultural hub for the region; yet, it was once just a dusty wasteland, "a valley of ashes" as F. Scott Fitzgerald dubbed it in the Great Gatsby. Its poetic, phoenix-like transformation from ash dump to oasis was driven by Queens' residents, the City and 1939 and 1965 World's Fair held in this park. These fairs put this park on the world's stage, and it has stayed there, hosting the United Nations General Assembly for five years, three baseball World Series at Shea Stadium, and the U.S. Open.
The Dragon Boat Racing competition will be held on Meadow Lake. This is the site of the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, and teams from New York practice in Meadow Lake during the summer months.
Fort Totten Park - Triathlon; Police Service Dogs
Fort Totten in Bayside, NY, is a former U.S. Army base that is now a public park. The almost 60-acre facility is also home to training grounds for the FDNY and the NYPD. The U.S. Army Reserve continues to work there as well.
A pristine stretch surrounding a preserved Civil War fortress, Fort Totten Park provides not only recreation and relaxation but a fascinating glimpse into New York's past.
Year-round, New Yorkers flock to Fort Totten Park to enjoy its special events, natural wonders, and historic buildings. On hot summer days, swimmers can take a dip in the pool and sunbathe around its grassy edges, or take canoes out and paddle along the Long Island Sound. Come Halloween, thousands are spooked by its enormous haunted "house," located in the old water battery. During the winter, bird enthusiasts congregate to watch migrating waterfowl rest before their long journey south. And exploring the fortress and its surrounding buildings remains a unique adventure during any season.
Urban Park Rangers lead regular tours of the fortress and the wildlife surrounding it for those who enjoy guided treks, and a visitors' center inside the park provides helpful information on the park's past for those prefer to scout alone.
Fort Totten is also home to the 2011 World Police & Fire Games office.
Abe Stark Skating Rink - Ice Hockey - Master B Division
Named in honor of a man who served as City Council President and the Brooklyn Borough President for three terms, Abe Stark loved Brooklyn, beneficence, business and baseball. The parkland was formerly the site of the Ravenhall Baths, a privately owned recreation facility for Coney Island day-trippers that contained swimming pools, locker rooms, and a sundeck. The City of New York acquired the land by condemnation in 1964, and assigned it to Parks that same year. The Abe Stark Rink opened in 1970 with an oversized parking lot intended to provide space for both visitors to the rink and those seeking other Coney Island attractions.
Abe Stark Rink is home to both teen and adult divisions of the New York Stars Ice Hockey team, a member of the Greater New York City Ice Hockey League. Local high school teams also use the rink regularly, and skaters of all ages and abilities are invited to test their blades during weekend public skating sessions held throughout the year.
Rockaway Beach & Boardwalk - Surfing
One of New York City's most popular summer destinations, the entire beach encompasses more than 170 acres of sun and sand, and every bit of it is put to good use. When the city warms up, New Yorkers of all sizes and types flock here. Seven playgrounds provide entertainment for the younger set, while volleyball and skating keeps adults active. The beach contains the city's only surfing areas, and when the surf's up boarders get in their wet suits and ride the waves, while in gentler waters, fishers cast their lines for striped bass and bluefish. And for those of a more traditional nature, there's always swimming, sunbathing, and snacking.
Stadium Tennis Center at Mill Pond Park- Tennis
Playing Tennis in New York City Just Became A Little Bit Easier and Welcoming
The new Stadium Tennis Center at Mill Pond Park, located in the shadow of Yankee Stadium at East 152nd Street and the Harlem River, can be labeled "the best-kept secret in New York City tennis". With sixteen cushioned, US Open style deco-turf, hard courts - including twelve indoor courts which are open for indoor play from October through April, New York City's newest indoor/outdoor tennis center commenced its first indoor season at the end of 2010. The excellent lighting, high indoor ceilings and spacious backcourts of the new Stadium Tennis Center are sure to please the tennis playing public and tournament level players.
The tennis center, operated through a license agreement with the City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation, is an integral part of Mill Pond Park and the Yankee Stadium Redevelopment Project. Formerly a vacant and decaying industrial site, Mill Pond Park has been transformed by the City of New York into a new 10-acre park, the first significant park on the Bronx bank of the Harlem River in decades. In addition to the new tennis center and adjacent clubhouse, Mill Pond Park features an outdoor classroom, beach area, picnic/barbeque area, waterfront views, a large sunken lawn space, sitting/viewing platforms, historical and way-finding signage, landscaping and an esplanade that unites the site.
For information about any of the New York City Parks, please visit the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation Website.

Accredited Badge System - Complete Your Badges Now or Risk Standing in Line at Accreditation!
Athletes should go to the Accredited Badge System to complete their badges and order their guest badges now. It is simple and takes only a few minutes. All that is required to complete the badge is to select your country and upload a photo of yourself. The link to the Accredited Badge System can be found on the 2011 WPFG website at www.2011wpfg.org.
Remember that photos must be passport style photos with a clear view of your face from the shoulders up. Make sure the photo is a good likeness of you and that you are not wearing a hat or sunglasses. These photos will be used to identify you at some venues and events. The picture file to be uploaded can be no larger than 1 MB (1,000 KB).
With over 15,000 athletes already registered to compete in the 2011 Games it is important that you complete your badge in advance of getting to New York City. If your badges are complete you will be fast tracked through the registration process. All you will need to do is show your identification to get your athlete badge as well any guest badges that you ordered. Guests are not able to register themselves, nor will they be allowed to pick up their own credentials. All Guests are attached to an Athlete and Guest Credentials will be picked up by the Athlete who registered them. If your badge is not complete then you may have to wait in line for your badge to be created.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Please consider the importance of Credentialing your Guests who will be accompanying you to the Games. This needs to be done prior to arriving in New York City as all credentials will be printed ahead of time. Without a credential, your Guest will not be allowed to attend the Opening or Closing Ceremony or the Candlelight Vigil, and they may be forced to wait on long lines getting into the Athletes Village or some Sporting Events. All sporting events are still free to the public which has been the tradition of the Games, however, at venues with limited capacity those with Credentials will be given priority access. In addition at certain times there may be a fee charged to the General Public to get into the Athlete's Village. If your Guest does not have a Credential they are considered to be with the General Public. The Games Credential also serves as a great souvenir that you were a part of the largest and one of the most significant World Police & Fire Games events in History.

2011 WPFG Sports Team
99% of the 2011 World Police & Fire Games Team are volunteers. This month we would like to highlight ten of our Sport Coordinators who have been hard at work for the last couple of years developing their sport. We thought you might like to know a bit about them and we have asked them to give us one piece of advice for the competitors coming to the 2011 WPFG.
Battalion Chief Pete Blum is an active member in the FDNY assigned to the 11th Division in Brooklyn and is the Sport Coordinator for Surfing. He will also be competing in the Stair Race at the World Trade Center. Pete has been surfing for the past 38 years and grew up in Rockaway Beach. When he heard about NYC hosting the WPFG, he felt it would be an honor to do his small part to help make the Games the best they could be - that was almost 2 years ago and with less than 60 days left, Pete is thrilled to be a part of the Games.
Pete's surfing travels have taken him to Hawaii (over 20 times!), Puerto Rico, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia as well as Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
Pete's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Never forget what happened in this City on September 11, 2001.
Police Officer Teresa Frizziola and Police Officer Michelle Frizziola are the Sport Co-Coordinators for Karate. Teresa is an active New York City Police Officer in the Midtown South Precinct in Manhattan. Teresa is a silver medal winner for Kumite in the Karate Competition in the 2009 WPFG. She became involved in the 2011 WPFG because it would be a personal fulfillment in her life and a dedication to her sport that she has practiced and loved for almost 20 years. She looks forward to seeing how the past two years of hard work and dedication will pay off by seeing her event come together.
Teresa's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Experience Everything! Come to New York with open minds and open hearts and see everything this Great City has to offer.
Michelle is also an active New York City Police Officer in the 70th Precinct in Brooklyn, New York. A gold medal winner for Kumite in the Karate competition at the 2009 WPFG, she is most looking forward to meeting the new people from around the world and being able to share common interests in being first responders. A friend recruited Michelle to be involved and she felt like it would be a great opportunity to put all her efforts and knowledge in a sport the she has loved all her life.
Michelle's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Give yourself a lot of time off because there is so much to experience in the great city of New York - oh, and get ready to have a great time!!
Firefighter Vincent Tummino is retired from the FDNY and is the Sport Coordinator for Lawn Bowls. Vinny became involved in the 2011 WPFG so that he could help to be a part of 2011 WPFG in REMEMBERING 9/11.
Vinny's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Sightsee and take in as much of Manhattan as possible. Bring a camera and takes lots of pictures!
Sergeant Tom Biggers is retired from the NYPD and is currently working as a Detective Investigator in the Nassau County District Attorney's Office. Tom is the President of the NYPD Running Club and he became involved with the Games because he has a great sense of pride in New York City. He wants to help make sure that the 2011 WPFG showcases how great our city and the NYPD and FDNY are. He is looking forward to meeting people from around the world and thinks that seeing the Opening Ceremony with all the different countries marching in will be one of the highlights of his week.
Tom's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Try your best at your particular sport, but when you're not competing, remember that there are so many things to do around the city related to the 2011WPFG. Specifically, don't forget that the games coincide with the ten year remembrance of September 11, 2001 and the 2011WPFG will be promoting a Candlelight Vigil, in addition to encouraging athletes to participate in the Father Mychal Judge Walk of Remembrance, or the World Trade Center Run to Remember. Look for details about these special events as we get closer to the Games.
Battalion Chief Tom Dolan is an active member of the FDNY and is the Sport Coordinator for Open Water Swim. Tom offered to help with the Open Water Swim for the WPFG for several reasons - one - retired FDNY Captain Pat Kilgallen and retired FDNY Deputy Chief Pat Savage agreed to help out. In addition, FDNY Captain Dennis Murphy and FDNY Lieutenant Mike Beehler also joined the team and these men and their wives will be managing Open Water Swim. As Tom states, this is truly a team effort!
Tom will also be competing in the Open Water Swim, the Triathlon and Swimming. He is really looking forward to "showing off" Coney Island to the rest of the world. I have spent over 20 summers in Coney Island. As a kid growing up in Brooklyn, we spent every weekend in a pool club down in Coney Island and occasionally venture out to the beach. During my high school and college years I was lifeguard for the Department of Parks in Coney Island. Coney Island has come a long way and I think it looks great and is perfect for the swim. I would encourage all participants to plan on spending the day in Coney Island. Get a Hot Dog at Nathan's, ride the Cyclone and Deno's Wonder Wheel, and take a good luck at the Aquarium.
Tom's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Don't limit your trip to New York by only competing... get some vacation time in too.
Firefighter Bobby McGuire is retired from the FDNY after 22 years of service and is the Sport Coordinator for Boxing. A 1987 WPFG Gold Medal winner, Bobby has also coached the FDNY Bravest Boxing Team for the past six Games. He is most looking forward to putting on the best Games possible and meeting new friends.
Bobby's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Come for as long as possible, there is plenty to see and even more to do!
Claudia Hardes is the Sport Coordinator for Indoor Soccer and has been a part of the initial sports planning team that met in February, 2008 during the ticker-tape parade celebrating the NY Giants winning the Super Bowl. She was recruited by Captain Joe Brosi, CEO of the 2011 WPFG, and a childhood friend of Claudia. Claudia's first opportunity to play organized soccer was on a co-ed summer league at the age of six - where she initially met Joe Brosi.
Soccer has become one of her great passions in life. Claudia has been given unbelievable opportunities to travel and play with various soccer teams all over the world, including the FDNY and NYPD soccer teams. She is still friends with the 12 girls she grew up playing soccer with; and the soccer friendships made since then are irreplaceable. More importantly, they literally span the globe. Claudia's past experience includes being an integral part of organizing the 30-year anniversary tournament for the FDNY soccer team in 2007 and the North American Police Soccer Tournament (NAPST) in 2003 with the NYPD soccer team. Claudia has attended and participated in the "Stop the Violence" police and fire Futsal tournament in both Washington, DC and Maryland for 14 years in a row. Most recently, she traveled with the NYPD women's team to the World Police Indoor Soccer Tournament (WPIST) in the Netherlands, 2009, and the Worldwide Indoor Soccer Police Association (WISPA) Tournament in Wavre, Belgium, 2010.
Claudia became the sport coordinator for Indoor Soccer because of her dedication and extreme interest in the sport. She attended the 2009 WPFG in British Columbia and was able to visit many of the venues. She is looking forward to meeting all the teams that she has been communicating with over the past few months and she hopes to add a few more soccer friends to her list!
Claudia's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Meet as many people as possible in the 2011 Games - they will be friends for life.
Firefighter Robert Grover is retired from the FDNY and is the Sport Coordinator for Wrist Wrestling. He became interested in arm wrestling at a young age through a 1980's Sylvester Stallone movie called Over the Top. Rob joined the Army out of high school and started wrestling fellow soldiers for fun (and sometimes money!). To Rob's surprise, he won most of his matches.
Soon after Rob became a firefighter, he entered an arm wrestling competition at a local fair where he was humbled by placing 3rd. He was now driven to train hard and practice with other arm wrestlers to compete in the next competition. His hard work paid off as he started placing 1st and 2nd in many professional arm wrestling competitions. Rob traveled to the 2005 WPFG in Quebec where he took home the gold medal in wrist wrestling.
In 2008, Rob was injured at work battling a house fire and his hands suffered third-degree burns that required skin grafts and leaving him disabled. At 33 years old, Rob was retired from the FDNY and no longer able to compete in arm wrestling again. When Rob was asked to be the Sport Coordinator for Wrist Wrestling for the 2011 WPFG, he jumped at the opportunity to be part of the sport and the job that I will always love.
Rob's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: Take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Whether it is seeing a Broadway show, visiting the Statue of Liberty or enjoying a fine dining experience, there are countless activities and attractions to do while visiting this great city.
Karen Awad is the Sport Coordinator for Air Rifle and Small Bore Rifle and is the Assistant Sport Coordinator for the Center Fire Pistol. She became involved in the Games during the venue search for Small Bore Rifle and was quickly asked to be the Sport Coordinator for Small Bore Rifle. She also agreed to manage Air Rifle and lend her expertise to Center Fire Pistol.
Karen is happy to have the opportunity to put her 20+ years of shooting and competing experience to use in organizing these events. Karen's husband, Hank, is retired from the NYPD and is responsible for getting Karen "hooked" on shooting, and will be by her side helping her with all of the sports.
She is most excited to meet shooters from all over the world and hopes to make a lot of friends. Karen thinks that having the opportunity to meet people from around the world who have the same interests as her is wonderful.
Karen's advice for those attending the 2011 WPFG: We warmly welcome you to this wonderful city we call home. You've come here to play, but I hope you have some time to explore at least a small part of what New York has to offer, what many of us who call this home take for granted. We have theatre, museums, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, parks, Little Italy, Chinatown. Almost anywhere you turn, there's something to see or do. So please take some time to have fun and enjoy the city we call home
