2017 Unicameral Session Finally Underway
IIAN Sponsors New Bill To Remedy Problems With Uninsured Independent Contractors - LB 553
The 2017 Unicameral session started on January 4, but wrangling over committee assignments, what to do about Senator Bill Kintner (who resigned effective January 30), and rules of debate has taken a lot of legislators' floor time during the first two weeks.  Unicameral committee bill hearings are being held each afternoon until March 28, when full-day floor debate begins.  The last day, or "sine die", is scheduled for June 2, 2017.   "Priority" bills, which will be named by senators, committees, and Speaker Jim Scheer by March 13, stand the best chance of being acted upon this session.
Out of the more than 660 bills introduced this session, IIAN's Legislative committee, chaired by Bob Hoppe of Columbus, is actively watching 28 which impact insurance agents, consumers, or the industry.  IIAN Legislative Representative Jim Cavanaugh is there every day, representing Big "I" members' interests.  Click here to see Jim's Unicameral Update for this week, including IIAN positions on bills on our watch list, and committee hearing activity.

IIAN's top issue for the two-year session is LB 553 introduced by Senator John Lowe of Kearney at IIAN's request, to address
