CAMDEN YACHT CLUB
Winter 2017 Newsletter

Commodore Report Dick Cease

Hello and Happy New Year to all CYC Members! The Club is pretty quiet as we move into winter with the boats under cover, the floats piled up next to the shed and the clubhouse shuttered. Everything is put away safe for the season, thanks to John and Barb and the efforts of the volunteers that help lift and store the floats. We have had a pretty mild winter so far, without much snow to remove. Although it seems pretty quiet around the clubhouse, there is a lot going on behind the scenes, with your officers meeting monthly and busily planning for the coming year. In November we performed our usual in-depth budgeting exercise, reviewing and improving the five-year window developed last year. This resulted in a budget for 2017 that was presented to and approved by the Board of Directors in early December, and a plan that should keep us financially secure for years to come. Thanks to Treasurer Jim Grimes for his great knowledge and leadership in this effort.
The big news is that French and Brawn, our caterers for a number of years, have decided to wind up their catering operation. So, we will be working hard to select a new outfit to provide lunch and evening goodies. I hope we can make the transition as smooth and seamless as possible, but Mike and his crew will be a hard act to follow.
Rich Anderson, our Vice Commodore, has been supervising work on the physical plant, including the planned drainage improvements under the parking lot and repairing the wall at the rear. Meredith Scheck, our Rear Commodore has been busiest of all, planning our great schedule of events for 2017, including some terrific Sunset Seminars, improving the website and getting out this newsletter. Arthur Adelberg, Fleet Captain, has assembled a terrific race and cruising program, including, for the second year, a cooperative effort with Lyman-Morse.
Of course, the lights are on in Elaine's office, with year-end accounting, sending out dues invoices, managing the wedding event schedule and selecting and ordering CYC related items. It seems she is just as busy now as in the summer!
In closing, I want to thank, once again, all of our staff, officers, directors, committee chairpersons and other volunteers for their continued hard work and effort.
I'm looking forward to 2017 at CYC, and I hope to see everyone there early and often!

Vice Commodore Report  Rich Anderson

The facilities were decommissioned in a routine fashion without incidence and without uncovering previously unknown maintenance items. Thanks to John and Barb for leading us through the process.
The Directors approved a $48,600 Capital Budget for Buildings, Grounds, Launch and Dock. We budgeted $42,900 in 2015.
The projects planned for 2017 include:
Repair Retaining Wall along the parking lot behind the club house. We will excavate behind the existing wall, install a 4-inch perforated drain at the base of the wall and backfill the excavated area with stone to the top of the wall. The perforated drain will be connected via a new pipe under the driveway to the existing catch basin. A 20-foot section of the wall will be dismantled and relayed where it is currently bulging.
Planning for Parking Lot Repaving. Bud Woodworth, John Tohanczyn, Bill Lane from Gartley & Dorsky and I met with Town officials to review a plan prepared by G&D. The plan includes new drainage pipes and basins below the lot, removal of existing large-rock fill and placing 8 inches of new gravel-fill in the north parking area, and removal and repaving of the entire parking lot surface. We believe the total project cost will be about $150,000. How this cost will be apportioned between the Town and the Club will be discussed and agreed upon in 2017. The Town will likely include the project in their 2018 budget with work to be done Fall 2018.
Repaint Club House Ceiling. The club house ceiling was last painted in 1997. It is time to scrape the flaking paint off and repaint. The flaking is due to time, not roof leakage. This project will be undertaken after our last event in October, 2017.
Upgrade Projection and Sound system. It is time to upgrade the projector and audio receiver to match new technology. We will have better quality and a permanently mounted hook-up and switch will make it less tense as we begin Sunset Seminars. We will mount the projector overhead, projecting onto a screen hung on the South wall above the door onto the porch.
Replace Chauncy B Engine. The Chauncey B engine warning-signal began sounding in September. The engine is a two-cycle model, no-longer manufactured and parts are difficult to find. Replacing the engine was the prudent decision.
New Dinghy Rack. This Spring we converted a portion of the inflatable dinghy rack to hold rigid dinghies. We did it with wood attached to the remaining iron pipe portion. We are going to replace the entire rack with an aluminum rack to match the other racks on the dock.
New Sandwich Prep Unit. We need a unit to hold refrigerated condiments, breads and provide a surface for preparing sandwiches.
Replace Norway Maple at top left of drive. The tree, damaged in the Winter of 2014 did not survive the dry period of Summer 2016 and will be removed and replaced by a new tree this Spring.
New Chairs, Tables and Flatware. Maryann and Cliff Kline and Meredith and Jay Scheck completed a complete inventory of our chairs and tables and discovered we need to replace 60 chairs and 5 tables. And we no longer have enough flatware to provide every member a complete set of flatware at our larger events.
Upgrade grassy area in the center of the parking area. John will add loam and reseed the area.
We continue to explore ways to reduce the congestion in the parking lot at lunch time when CAYSP classes are underway. Adjusting the luncheon schedule to noon - 2:30, prohibiting parking alongside the driveway coming down the hill from Bay View Street, finding off-property parking for luncheon staff and reminding all members to bring only one vehicle to lunch and assure their non-member guests park on the street.
Please let us know if you see other facility and fleet improvements we should consider.

Rear Commodore Report   Meredith Scheck

On behalf of all CYC members, a round of applause is due to Faith Hague for her year of outstanding service to the club during her 2016 year as Rear Commodore. The team that Faith organized - Sue Pfau and Denise Pukas as Social Committee co-chairs and Johanna Stinson as our award winning Sunset Seminar organizer - is THE BEST. Their organizational skills and committment to make the CYC activities fun, made for a great 2016 season. Sue and Denise brought the social events to a high level of attendance and each event had every detail expertly executed. Johanna not only planned for excellent speakers for the seminars, but integrated the CAYSP instructors and sailors into each seminar program. The goal was to raise awareness within the community of CAYSP programs - and this effort resulted in helping to raise funds to support its programs. With all of the great volunteer effort that goes into making CYC activities so successful, we shouldn't forget that our staff of Elaine, Barb and John are the glue that keeps it all functioning smoothly: THANK YOU!
As 2017 starts, a small but hardy group of winter folks enjoyed an evening of friendship and dinner at the Fireside on January 29. The final calendar of 2017 planned activities, both at the club and on the water, will be published in the Spring newsletter. It will, of course, also be available on the website www.camdenyachtclub.org. A new members luncheon will be vitalized this coming season. It gives new members an informal way to meet one another as well as to familiarize them with CYC's "protocols" and personnel.
In closing, your ideas, comments and suggestions are welcome. Please contact me (jtscheck@aol.com) at any time. I want to help make the 2017 season a great one at the Club.

Treasurer Report    Jim Grimes

Our club had a very successful year financially under the leadership of our Officers and staff. We were able to continue the upkeep of Ambassador with the replacement of its sole and to greatly upgrade the kitchen exhaust system. Looking into 2017 we plan to replace the engine on Chauncey B, paint the clubhouse ceiling, repair part of the parking lot wall and replace tables, chairs and flatware for our dining events.
In 2016 CAYSP replaced three of their boats to maintain a full fleet for this active program. They plan in 2017 to add an additional coach boat and some new more durable primary trainers for the beginning Opti sailors.
With revenues at plan and good expense control we ended 2016 a few thousand dollars above our planned cash position.
The membership remains full with a good waiting list which bodes well both for our financial situation and the attractiveness of our organization.
I extend my thanks to the Directors and Officers for their input and support. And as always I am indebted to Elaine for her constant help and support.

Fleet Captain Report   Arthur Adelberg

Except for the lucky few who may have escaped to warmer waters, the fleet is quiet and boats are hopefully tucked away inside or under their winter covers. We were fortunate to have an active and exciting season of racing and cruising in 2016, and look forward to more of the same in 2017.
RACE MANAGEMENT
2016 was our first year with a professional race manager, Peter Clapp, who did an outstanding job. We look forward to his returning to the role in 2017. Peter could still use extra hands aboard the race committee boat, so please keep that in mind if you have time to volunteer next summer. Many who offered to help out in 2016 didn't show up on race days. If you have an interest, and need me to help coordinate with you-for example by sending reminders-please let me know.
2017 SCHEDULE
2017 should be another busy season, with numerous opportunities for racers and cruisers.
Our newest event this past year, the highly successful Camden Classics Cup (www.camdenclassicscup.com) co-hosted with Lyman Morse at Wayfarer, will be repeated on July 28-30.
It will be open to Classic sailboats, Spirit of Traditional sailboats built 1971 or later, and classic fiberglass boats built 1969 or earlier. This year there will also be a division for modern PHRF rated boats. The regatta will again include shoreside events at both Lyman Morse and the CYC. For additional news and registration information please check out the event website at www.camdenclassicscup.com
The regatta comes right before the venerable Eggemoggin Reach Regatta (info at www.erregatta.com). The Camden Yacht Club will again host the Camden Classic Regatta on Friday, August 4, which is the feeder race to Brooklin. This race will be preceded by a breakfast on the porch and a skippers meeting.
We expect that the Castine Yacht Club, as in years past, will be hosting the Castine Classic Yacht Race to Camden on Thursday, August 3.
And not to let up with the excitement, we are planning to hold the world-renowned Codger Cup, pitting some of the Grand Masters (or maybe grandfathers) of Camden sailing, at 5 PM on August 3rd as well.
PHRF Series
All told, we will have at least six races spread over two weekends for classic sail here on the Maine coast.
We are once again planning four races in the CYC Summer PHRF Series, Saturdays on June 24th, July 29th, August 19th, and August 26th. One "throw out" will be allowed so racers need not feel they need to attend all races to be competitive in the series. These races will be open to both member and non-CYC boats with a view to increasing the number of boats on the line and perhaps better introducing some local sailors with boats to our club. The series will score points for and count towards GMORA standings. If there is enough interest, there will be both racing and cruising divisions, so the casual club racer need not fear that they will not be able to compete or have a positive experience. They will simply be racing in a larger fleet, which should be more fun.
King of Spain
The King of Spain races will be on Saturday July 1 and Saturday August 5th. This regatta will remain open to CYC members only. There will be no CYC cruise conflicts so we hope to see a large number of participants!
Camden Invitational Regatta
On July 23rd and 24th we will host the Fifth Annual Camden Invitational Regatta, which is a GMORA-scored event. There should be a lot of boats in the area as the Rockland Yacht Club will host the Pen Bay Pursuit Race on the weekend of July 16th. We have had great feedback in prior years from visiting and member yachtsman and look forward to an even greater turnout this year.
Paper Cup
Subject to coordination with the Rockport Boat Club and the Rockland Yacht Club, we hope to hold the Paper Cup Regatta on Saturday July 8th. We will try to avoid conflicts with other Penobscot Bay racing events that are planned.
2017 CRUISING SCHEDULE
Galen Todd has graciously volunteered once again to head up our cruising efforts. As has become customary, arrangements are being made behind the scenes to ensure favorable cruising conditions. The club cruises generally are not set itineraries but ideas for a fun summer of cruising. Past cruises have evolved into marvelous events based on who is going, group ideas and interests and most important, pre-cruise and during-cruise input. The intent here is only to set some general dates and big picture planning. Wind, weather, tide and whim rule!
Friday to Sunday, June 16-18 Short Cruise
Friday to Sunday, July 14-16 Short Cruise
Saturday to Friday, August 19-25 Long Cruise
Saturday to Sunday, September 9-17 Long Cruise. Please note that this cruise may go to Canada so passports and Small Vessel Reporting System details may need updating.
Sunday September 10Warren Island Picnic

MEMBER PASSINGS
Since the Spring 2016 Newsletter we note with sadness the passing of the following members:
John R. Whitney, who joined the Club in 1955 and who served as Commodore 1973-1975; Edith Pfotenhauer(1984); and Susan Crowe (1998). All of these much beloved members are sorely missed. On behalf of the entire CYC community, we extend out sympathy to their families.

CAYSP Report    Sue Conover

Happy 2017 from CAYSP (Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program)!
First and foremost, CAYSP thanks all CYC members for your continued support and interest in our program. CAYSP is integral to the yacht club's mission of promoting programs related to educational activities ashore and afloat and to make those programs available to our mid-coast community. You, as a CYC member, are critical to a successful CAYSP season.
I want to give you an update on CAYSP's rowing and sailing programs held at CYC for 8 weeks each summer. We anticipate about 230 rowers and sailors coming to CAYSP to learn boating for 2017. This year we will be offering 9 different classes to try to meet the interests of our students, ages 5-18. For more detailed information on classes please check out the CYC website, CAYSP tab or email caysp@camdenyachtclub.org.
Each and every year the CAYSP Board (which is comprised of CYC members and members of the community) debriefs the previous season with the goal of positive growth and the deliverance of a quality program for the next year. The backbone of our work this fall has been to evaluate our student needs and make certain we are doing diligence in meeting these needs. As such, we have made some decisions regarding the fleet, class offerings and scheduling changes to further improve the program. Most importantly, we want to grow our scholarship opportunities so more of the area's youth can benefit and enjoy the thrill of sailing!
CAYSP intends to deliver the best program we can AND to do this we need your help and continued support. We have a wish list of equipment found in the CYC office, a financial donation is always welcome and we will be actively fundraising through FUN summer events. Remember CAYSP is a non-profit and Elaine has the necessary paperwork for tax purposes as you claim your donation.
For the 2017 summer season, CAYSP will be hosting three events to help supplement the cost of running the program:
  • The first will be a massive nautical yard sale held sometime in June just in time to get ready for the season. Think about all that unused boat equipment in your garage - it could be a tax deduction as all proceeds would go towards supporting CAYSP!
  • Our second event is the 2nd annual Bucket Race to be held around the 4th of July. Building off of last year's very successful race, we will be recruiting CYC members to participate in this fun filled...and exciting event!
  • Lastly, near the end of July we will partner with the Flatbread Company for an evening of entertainment, fun and games - did someone say "Captain is Coming" - and to share a delicious meal. Flatbread Company will donate a portion of the evening's proceeds to CAYSP - so plan to come hungry and bring all of your friends!
As the event dates become finalized, we will be sharing more detailed information with you.
I thank you for your consideration in supporting rowing and sailing in Camden harbor.
Please email me with any concerns or questions at caysp@camdenyachtclub.org.
Enjoy the winter,
Sue Conover, Program Director CAYSP
