2018: The Beginning of a Fresh Start

Clara Reynolds
President & CEO
So I have a funny admission to make:  I love wandering through office supply stores!   I love looking at new pens, pencils, desk sets and the like.  But there is something almost magical about visiting an office supply store in January with all the organization and planning tools they have available.  For me, January is a time to make a brand new start.  Think about how fun it used to be when starting a new calendar at the beginning of the year.  Those new, blank pages served as a reminder that there are days ahead filled with opportunities, adventures, and yes, challenges.

I think that all of us need an opportunity to have a fresh start from time to time, and the beginning of a new year can be the perfect time.  Take New Year's resolutions as an example.  We resolve to lose weight, exercise more, or maybe balance our bank accounts more regularly.  These simple actions represent some ways we want to get our life back on track.  But, there are other circumstances in life that take us far off course.... A New Beginning for Camila

Camila had a steady job in Puerto Rico and was living as a single parent raising her children, Sofia, 8, and Gabriel, 13.

Everything changed on September 20th.

When Hurricane Maria tore through the island, Camila rode out the storm in her home. When the wind subsided and the rains stopped, she assessed the damage. Her house was uninhabitable. Her furniture and clothing were destroyed. She needed to start over and she needed to be somewhere with greater opportunities for success.

She reached out to her cousin in Tampa. He offered to do what he could to help, but couldn't provide her with a place to stay. She had enough money for a flight to Tampa and a few days' accommodations at a motel.

Fortunately, once in Tampa, Camila learned she could connect to help by calling 2-1-1....

Born This Way Foundation Visits Green Dot

Shadille Estepan from The Born This Way Foundation
at the Green Dot Workshop
The Green Dot anti-violence program in Ybor City provides education and tools everyone can use to reduce domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and stalking in their community.

When Lady Gaga brought her Channel Kindness tour to Tampa in December, representatives from her Born This Way Foundation paid a special visit to Ybor City to attend a Green Dot violence prevention workshop. The representatives took time to talk with attendees about their focus on youth, kindness, and mental health, and even did a weekly podcast from the event. The Crisis Center is honored to be a tour stop for the Born this Way Foundation!

Travelers Aid: A Local Friend When Plans Go Awry

Volunteers at the Travelers Aid desk at TIA
This past holiday season, more than 500,000 people traveled through Tampa International Airport. If you've ever experienced air travel, you know that things don't always go according to plan. Severe weather, airline mechanical problems, and issues at connecting airports can suddenly leave someone stranded without a support system.

Through the support of AAA -The Auto Club Group, as well as more than 30 dedicated volunteers, the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay operates the Travelers Aid desk at Tampa International Airport. Last year, more than 20,000 travelers received help at the desk. Seven days a week, people at the airport who are experiencing a travel crisis can speak to a friendly person who will assist them in connecting to the support they need!
