2018 Year in Review

As we look back on the past year, w e want to thank the many people and companies who have supported us in 2018. Without your generous donations, we could not have accomplished our groundbreaking work in diabetes research, education, and care.

2018 was an amazing year! Here are some of our highlights from 2018:

Groundbreaking Research
  • SDRI partnered with Harvard, Mayo Clinic, and Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai for the first ever Longitudinal Observation of Insulin Requirements and Sensor Use in Pregnancy Study (LOIS-P). 
  • SDRI was 1 of only 4 research centers across the US that studied Tandem's t:slim X2 Insulin Pump with Basal-IQ technology, the first automated insulin delivery system approved for use by children 6 years of age and older. Dr. Jordan Pinsker also was invited to present his results American Diabetes Association’s 78th Scientific Sessions. 

  • Working with Dr. Eyal Dassau from Harvard University, Dr. Jordan Pinsker led a team at SDRI to design and evaluate a smartphone artificial pancreas system to be used in future artificial pancreas clinical trials.

  • The pilot project, Mil Familias, successfully concluded with the collection of extensive data from over 100 Latino adults on genetic, biological, psychological, behavioral, and environmental factors impacting health. Also this year, www.latinodiabetes.net, an easily-accessible bilingual resource for discovering the latest in science-based diabetes research relevant to U.S. Latinos, was launched.

  • SDRI’s Farming For Life program completed a successful pilot study which applied the concept of using fresh vegetables as a prescription for those with, or at risk of developing, type 2 diabetes, providing measureable, positive health outcomes. 
  • SDRI conducted over 16 pivotal clinical trials including studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, JDRF, the Helmsley Charitable Trust, Dexcom, Abbott Libre, and  Novo Nordisk, among others.


  • SDRI's successful diabetes education program, Ocho Pasos a la Buena Salud (Eight Steps to Better Health) celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, touching the lives of more than 2,000 people with diabetes.

  • SDRI launched a year-long Diabetes Prevention Program, designed to prevent or delay the progression from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes, in collaboration with local YMCAs through funding provided by the Area Agency on Aging.

  • SDRI’s Diabetes and Innovation team developed the first comprehensive guide of available and appropriate technology for use by pregnant women as a resource to other healthcare providers. 
National & International Presentations

  • SDRI was invited to make 9 different presentations at the 2018 American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Session. This annual conference draws more than 13,000 medical professionals who unveil cutting-edge research, treatment recommendations, and advances in diabetes. 

  • Dr. Kristin Castorino was asked to present on “Enhanced Accuracy of the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System” at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes’ Annual Conference in Berlin, Germany.

  • Dr. David Kerr discussed the latest digital technologies being created for diabetes care, and other SDRI research, at conferences around the globe including Berlin, Paris, Tehran, Singapore, and Nova Scotia as well as Washington DC.

Next year will mark the 75th Anniversary of Dr. William Sansum's founding of Sansum Diabetes Research Institute. We hope you join us in celebrating 75 years of progress in 2019.
