Dade County Superintendent Talks about the Character Theme: Knowledge
A Word About Character from Davis Principal Josh Ingle

Our character shapes the unique qualities displayed by each and every one of us. As a result, we naturally become judged based on our character. Our actions and/or behaviors at home, school, work, and within our communities define the type of person we really are. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and model excellent character traits starting at an early age. Students that develop a solid foundation of character become grounded in their beliefs and core values and are better equipped when challenged by adversity or opposition. As John Wooden stated, “be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are” (Wooden).

As an educator, my mission is focused not only educating the minds of students, but also educating the hearts which begins with relationships. When students encounter problems or different challenges, I use those opportunities as “teachable moments” and encourage students to identify the positives, regardless of the situation. When students realize that there is a relationship of trust, they suddenly begin to become problem solvers and take responsibility their own actions. While there’s no secret recipe for establishing positive relationships with students, it indeed takes time and consistent reinforcement.
