TWO FIRSTS IN 2018: VETERANS BUILD & PLATYPUS BUILD
On April 26, 2018, US Army Veteran Ed Floyd, his wife Elizabeth, and their three beautiful children moved into their new home, the first on Turner Way. Ed and Elizabeth worked tirelessly with our volunteers to build their home while the Veterans Build committee, chaired by Commissioner Stan Primozich and Nathan Bakkala, rallied the entire community to support our very first Veterans Build! A special thanks to the
American Legion Post 21
for all their help with the build and the dedication.

On November 10, 2018, Javier & Margarita Martinez and their delightful children moved into their home. The first ever Platypus Build was a competition between Duck and Beaver fans to raise funds and volunteers to build a home for the Martinez family. Javier & Javier Jr. spent every weekend building their home with our construction crew, aided by lots of folks wearing green or orange. During the 12-week competition, the Beavers crushed the Ducks by winning 10 of the 12 weeks, in large part due to the generosity of Les Toth.

Turner Way
The long and winding road of completing Turner Way, the internal street of the Aspire Community Development, finally came to an end when the road was paved and accepted by the City in September. Although there are still a few small driveways to fix, Turner Way, the road named for MacHabitat’s founder Bernie Turner, is now home to the Floyd and Martinez families. Bernie was on hand at both dedications to offer a blessing for the homes on "his" street. --->

Aspire Park
Work on the future Aspire Park began this year with clearing and leveling of the 12,000 s.f. lot, thanks to some, wonderful dedicated volunteers who were not afraid to work in the mud. Grass was planted and will be growing on the park in Spring, thanks to
Buchanan Cellers. We hope to develop a plan for a community gathering place and play structure in 2019.

OUR 2019 HABITAT FAMILIES
Our 2018 Women Build got off to a slow start due to issues with the road. We kicked off building the Sherwood home in May during Women Build Week. Our committee, led by Patty Haddeland and Tenley Hardt, was out in full force. Construction then stalled until the Fall, but the house is now moving along quickly. On New Year’s Eve day, Washington Roofing put on the roof, its 60
th one for MacHabitat! Ember and her two children have been waiting patiently to move into their new home. It won’t be too much longer!

The Espinoza Maggard Family
Lorena Garcia and her three children share an old, tiny, single-wide trailer that is barely habitable. While Lorena & her son each have a small bedroom, her two daughters sleep on a broken folding bed in the living room. Their home is unsafe and unhealthy. Despite this, the family is grateful to have each other and a roof over their heads. By partnering with MacHabitat, Lorena hopes to accomplish her goals of providing consistency and structure for her children. The Garcia Home will be our 2019 Women Build.
Marcelo and Miranda live in a cramped apartment with their two children. Despite their best efforts to remove water from the carpet and black mold from their place, their daughter’s asthma continues to worsen. Additionally, there is no safe place for the children to play. They yearn for a home that is healthy and safe and are overjoyed at the opportunity to partner with MacHabitat to build their own home.
All three families would love your support in 2019! Help us build homes by serving on a committee, volunteering to build or work in the ReStore, donating funds or services, or providing salable goods to the ReStore!
We sadly said so long to Britt MacDonald Brenhaug, our Bookkeeper and Jill of All Trades. After nearly five years with MacHabitat, Britt is pursuing her accounting degree and will work year-round for H&R Block. We wish her the best!
With Britt’s departure, we welcomed two new part-time employees to our MacHabitat family: Michelle Huber, Family Services Coordinator; and Kelli Smith, Bookkeeper. Both women are excited to do their part to help us build homes, community, and hope! Michelle can be reached at
[email protected] or 503-687-1413; Kelli can be reached at

503-687-1411.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, ReStore
The ReStore’s income for 2018 was $299,630.84, up from 2017’s $287,175.79: an increase of $12,455.05 (4.3%). This figure includes the sale of donated merchandise as well as a small amount of purchased items. It also includes donation pickup and delivery fees, paint recycling, metal recycling, and online sales (eBay).
Using HfHI’s formula converting dollars to pounds ($1 = 3.75 lbs.),
the McMinnville ReStore
kept over one million pounds out of our local landfill
. Even more impressive, there are more than 850 ReStores across the country, and McMinnville is average. In other words, Habitat Restores in the United States recycled in excess of 850 million pounds of material!
After a few soft years for the ReStore in 2016 and 2017, sales and donations picked up in 2018. To control the volume of traditional donations of building supplies and furniture, we established tighter guidelines for acceptance. Thank you for not being offended if we couldn’t take your donation: sometimes there was no room, or we knew that type of item would just not sell. We appreciate your understanding!
We are continuing our ReStore Online sales. Your donations of valuable items for us to sell on eBay, such as china, collectibles, and memorabilia, etc., helped us raise over $17,000 in 2018. With the help of Swedemom Center of Giving, the wonderful non-profit organization guiding our eBay efforts, we hope to soon have a link on our
website showing you all the eBay items MacHabitat has available.
As always, the ReStore would not have been able to operate without the dedication of our wonderful volunteers and donors. Success at the ReStore means more money for building homes, community, and hope. Thanks to all who contribute to, volunteer for, and shop at the ReStore!

CHEERS TO OUR MAJOR DONORS!
There’s not enough room to individually recognize all our donors, large and small, in this report. Whether it’s a $10 bill or a $20,000 check, we couldn’t do our work without you. Thanks to all for helping us build homes, community, and hope. We love you all!
