CLERGY RETREAT 2018:  A TIME OF REFR ESHMENT & RE NEWAL

Participants gathered for the 2018 Pastors' Retreat

by Debbie Ingram Schmidt
     Associate for Spiritual Leader Development

On Wednesday, Apr. 11, seventeen clergy from the Presbytery gathered for a 24-hour retreat at Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center in Marriottsville, Md. During their time together, some engaged in centering prayer or spiritual journaling while others practiced yoga or reflected alone. Open Space conversations took place late Wednesday afternoon and a lively game of Taboo rounded out Wednesday evening.

Two facilitators shared their gifts with those in attendance. Cecilia Amaral,
a psychotherapist and Spiritual Director who also offers classes through Well For the Journey in Towson, offered workshops on Centering Prayer  and Spiritual Journaling. Cecilia was also available for personal spiri tual direction during the retreat. The Rev. Kimberly Copeland, offered yoga sessions on both days of the retreat.

A retreat centered on spiritual practice, collegiality, and solitude was a draw for many who came. As one pastor said, it was "a way to make connections with other pastors in the presbytery which there is never time to do at Pres bytery Gatherings."  Some of those who attended reflected on what they found meaningful about their experience together:

"'Being together' and meeting other pastors was indeed the best part, just as I hoped."

"The Open Space discussions with mutual invitation around issues we all face."

"Centering prayer; one-on-one connection with a spiritual director; relationship-building with colleagues."

"Spiritual Direction, yoga, bonding with clergy-I need all three."

If you were not able to attend the retreat, make plans to be there next year! If you would be interested in helping to plan the next retreat, please contact Debbie Schmidt, Associate for Spiritual Leader Development.
