Our Cosmetic Medical Trend Predictions For 2018
When it comes to knowing what cosmetic treatments are effective vs.what's just hype, who better to ask than the cosmetic medical professionals who spend their days performing them, which is us.
In my opinion, these are the esthetic treatment trends that are effective & whose popularity will continue to grow in 2018:
  • Microneedling continues to impress with its results- According to RealSelf, interest in microneedling shot up 85% in 2017, and it's one of our most popular treatments
Thread lift results
Our thread lift results in 2006
  • Facial thread lifts are back- we had great results with thread lifts 12 years ago, until the company that supplied them closed it's aesthetic product division. Now, new absorbable threads are available that can both lift the skin and stimulate collagen growth, and will be available (along with our new website thread page & pricing) at Skinspirations starting 2/1/18.
  • Treatment Omakase (chef's choice) - Patients are learning to trust a professional with the choice of treatment vs requesting a specific treatment based on marketing. Every day there's a new cosmetic device being touted in the media (why do people believe Dr. Oz? "Half of Oz's recommendations either lacked scientific support or were completely contradicted by publicly available data. When Senator McCaskill, during a Senate hearing on weight-loss pills, asked him about these issues, Oz responded by saying, "I recognize that oftentimes they don't have the scientific muster to present as fact." But he continues to act as if he doesn't care. When is the last time he practiced medicine?"), that often just has a new brand name but is old technology, or it has miraculous promises but no science to back up its claims, and people will call and want to schedule that treatment. It's almost impossible for anyone not in the cosmetic medical field to know what available treatment option is the best choice for their goals, and they're easily swayed to believe the marketing promises.   "Publishers don't sell magazines by reminding readers that nothing works" (Read the article, "The Pseudoscience of Beauty Products" in The Atlantic). Take advantage of our knowledge and expertise with our initial complimentary consultations, and learn what we feel are the best treatment options for you.
  • Prejuvenation - More people in their 20's & 30's are trying to nip wrinkles & skin damage in the bud before they start, with treatments like Botox and professional skincare, rather than waiting until they have to repair wrinkles & damage.
  • Encouraging, vs discouraging, skin bacteria (see the article below)- Like probiotics for your gut, maintaining good bacteria on your skin helps keep the bad bacteria levels in check, so stop buying antibacterial products if you don't have an immunity problem. Studies have shown benefits in maintaining levels of certain bacteria with rosacea, acne, and possibly general skin aging. (I make green tea kombucha and am doing a trial on it's topical application).
  • Fat transfers, also called fat grafting, consist of taking fat from an area where it's unwanted, and placing it in areas where plumping is desired. Microfat and nanofat transfers have also become more popular because, unlike full face fat transfers, obtaining and transferring small quantities of fat can be done with smaller needles and almost no downtime.
In my opinion, watch out for the following treatments & trends that are mostly hype:
  • Native cosmetic medical advertising masquerading as informational articles or "Best ...." cosmetic doctor/practice awards. Many "articles" online & in magazines are actually forms of paid advertising designed to look like objective informational reporting, and most of the doctor or medical practice awards you see publicized, like the list of "Top Doctors" in New Beauty Magazine, for example, are simply "awarded" to anyone who pays the fee. If most of these awards are essentially being sold, what does the award signify?
  • Micro-Botox- superficial injections of Botox or Dysport used to decrease pore size, smooth skin & decrease oil production. Even though the name includes "Micro", the price is not.
  • PRP (platelet rich plasma) treatments are great for a lot of goals (tendonitis, plantar fasciiatis, chronic dry eyes, increased full laser resurfacing, etc.), but adding PRP  to fractionated laser resurfacing treatments doesn't improve the results. Studies show that the skin heals just as rapidly without the PRP.  Why have your blood drawn and pay more if there's no benefit?
  • Any treatments where the only impressive before & after photos were provided by the company that makes the device

Cosmetic Medical Treatments Best Scheduled Before Spring

Certain cosmetic laser & IPL treatments target skin pigmentation and with these, ideally they're easiest to perform when there's no background tan. Obviously, in Florida, this is the only time of year when most people aren't getting much sun.

Likewise, treatments that replace damaged skin with brand new skin require strict sun protection for the first few weeks after the treatment, and that's easier when the days are shorter and the sun's rays not as direct.

Post-treatment redness or blotchiness can persist for for up to several weeks after Profractional laser resurfacing, when done on the body, which is easier to hide with winter clothing.

We recommend doing the following treatments in winter months, ideally:

Simple Ways to Make your Neck Look Better
and the #1 neck cream has just gone next level

Our Tips for Your Most Beautiful Neck:

  • Use the right products. You should be cleansing, toning, moisturizing & protecting your neck with the same level of enthusiasm that you do your face but also be sure to use a product specifically designed to rejuvenate the delicate & unique skin on your neck such as Revisions Nectifirm or the new Nectifirm Advanced.
  • Exfoliate the skin on your neck but be gentle. The skin here is much more sensitive than your face so a couple of times a week should do it.
  • Make your neck look better in less than a minute by bringing your makeup down your jawline onto your neck (now keep going ALL the way down your neck). This goes for primer, tinted moisturizers, foundation, powder & even your bronzer. Anyone who looks at your face can also see your neck. Make them match.
  • Put down the devices. Take a break from social media. "Tech neck" is a real thing. The constant hunching over our devices is not only bad for our posture (not to mention our relationships) but it also really enhances those lovely rings around the neck. Unless this is the look you are going for ease up on the scrolling.
  • Last but certainly not least, don't forget the spf.
If you're ready for more results consider a treatment with no social downtime. Some treatments that can really make a difference in the appearance of your neck  include Microneedling (corrects textural issues like crepey skin) , IPL (nothing beats it for improving discoloration like redness & darker browns spots, it also tightens) &  Radiofrequency  (a gentle way to lift & firm skin).

Tip: If you are already having your face treated with one of these services - it greatly benefits you to add in your neck since the cost of adding it is typically, about 25-50% less than the cost of treating the neck alone. #worthit

Plan ahead! Schedule February's $99 Skincare Special  which includes a Radiofrequency treatment as well as an application of Nectifirm.

Dr. Cesar Lara
Our Recommendation For Your Individualized Weight Management is Dr.  CĂ©sar Lara
Weight loss and weight management are goals for many, if not most, of our patients, and over the last year, we've seen miraculous results with patients we have  who were being treated  at

One of these patients, who since seeing Dr. Lara, looks and feels fabulous, told me every time she came in to see me, that she thought he & I should meet, because our treatments complement each other so much.

She must have been telling Dr. Lara the same and he was gracious enough to come over to discuss his progressive approaches to weight and age management with our entire staff.

Our patients are some of the most knowledgeable people I've ever met, especially when it comes to holistic medicine and nutrition, and Dr. Lara is an authority on these topics as well as being an MD trained in western medicine.

We have no other reason for referring our patients to Dr. Lara, other than wanting the best results for them.

Facial Exercises Help Middle-Aged Women Appear More Youthful
facial exercise
You too can easily perform these exercises while stopped at red lights

From: Science News

Northwestern University, Chicago, IL

A 30-minute daily or alternate-day facial exercise program sustained over 20 weeks improved the facial appearance of middle-aged women, resulting in a younger appearance with fuller and firmer upper and lower cheeks, reports a new study. This is the first scientific study to test the premise of facial exercise improving appearance. The exercises enlarged facial muscles so faces had more volume. Women looked an average of three years younger after 20 weeks of exercises, as rated by dermatologists.

The Solution for Skin Ailments Could Be Right Under Your Nose
from the NY Times, by Ferris Jabr

Your skin is a tapestry of ecosystems roughly the size of three bath towels. Complex societies of bacteria, viruses and fungi live in these diverse habitats - from the oil fields of the face and back, to the damp caverns of the nose, to the parched and hairless palms.
For decades researchers have argued that some of the skin's microscopic residents are partly to blame for certain disorders, such as acne and eczema. Now, it seems, bacteria may be part of the treatment, too.
