The Wurlitzer can respond with all the tonal resources of an orchestra, band, or jazz trio, but with the spontaneity of one musician. The Wurlitzer, greatest of them all, the envy of every other city. Enjoy music limited only by the artist's imagination. Enjoy the shows: 20 / 20 , Sound of Silents , Bach to Bacharach , and Big Band Jazz .
20 / 20 – Saturday, September 14, 2019
Justin Stahl
20 / 20 is the beginning of shows leading to the Wichita Wurlitzer centennial in 2026. The show presents a variety of music since 1926. The Wurlitzer is limited only by the artist’s imagination.
Justin Stahl is the artist for 20 /20 and is a native of Beech Grove, Indiana. He has entertained thousands of patrons of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in the last eight productions of their annual Yuletide Celebration by playing the Wurlitzer pipe organ installed at the Hilbert Circle Theatre.
Sound of Silents – Tuesday, November 5, 2019
Clark Wilson
Sound for silent movies came only from the orchestra, theatre organ, or pianist in each theatre. More than 10,000 theatre organs were built to give the movies their voices. Music soundtracks for today’s movies evolved from these live accompaniments for the silents.
Clark will accompany Wings , the first winner of the Best Picture, at the time called Best Production, at the very first Annual Academy Awards in 1929.
The Principals - Tuesday, March 17, 2020
Richard Elliott & Brett Valliant
The Wichita Wurlitzer tonal palette permits a range of music from Bach to Bacharach to be performed. Richard Elliott and Brett Valliant are respectively the principal organists for the Mormon Tabernacle Æolian-Skinner and the Wichita Wurlitzer.
Big Band Jazz - Tuesday, May 5, 2020
Delano Jazz Orchestra & Brett Valliant
The Delano Jazz Orchestra joins the Wichita Wurlitzer for an evening of Big Band Jazz. Experience the back and forth improvisation between the orchestras.
Big Band Jazz came as New Orleans jazz migrated to Chicago and New York to energize social dancing in the early 1900s. Ferde Grofé wrote arrangements in which he divided the jazz orchestra into sections that combined in various ways using these new rhythms. The sound matured as notable band leaders such as Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington developed their own big band sounds during the Swing Era.
