MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (CTI) is combining the 2019 Higher Education and Behavioral Health Gold Star Standards of Excellence (GSSE) programs and will host a recognition celebration during CTI’s Annual Treatment & Prevention Conference on June 18, 2019 in South Portland. At the GSSE Awards Breakfast, we will celebrate the successes of the 2019 awardees with wider support and acknowledgement from champions and stakeholders in the fields of tobacco treatment and prevention. 

CTI will be offering one free individual registration (per organization/application) to attend the Annual Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Conference to those Higher Education and Behavioral Health entities that submit an application for the 2019 GSSE program.

Acknowledging your efforts in creating tobacco-free environments and having your voice/sector represented at the conference is important to our collective work in promoting safe and healthy environments in Maine. We hope you will apply to and join us for the 2019 Gold Star Standards of Excellence Program.
2019 GSSE Program Dates

Application Release: Monday April 1, 2019
Application guidance documents and webinar are available on our website .
A conference registration link/code will be emailed once your application submission has been confirmed.

Applications Due: Friday April 26, 2019

Awards Celebration: Tuesday June 18, 2019

The annual Gold Star Standards of Excellence recognition program encourages and supports Maine’s institutions and organizations that are addressing smoking and tobacco use by creating and maintaining smoke and tobacco-free policies to provide a healthy and safe environment for their students, faculty, staff and visitors.

All Maine Behavioral Health Organizations, Colleges/Universities and Career/Trade Schools are encouraged to apply for recognition. Those that meet a minimum of seven of the ten standards will be recognized with an award at the
Awards Celebration event at the Annual Tobacco Treatment &
Prevention Conference in June 2019.

7-8 Standards = BRONZE AWARD
9 Standards = SILVER AWARD
10 Standards = GOLD AWARD

The Annual Tobacco Treatment & Prevention Conference brings nationally recognized speakers and local experts together to discuss a wide array of tobacco treatment and prevention topics, new research and innovative approaches to tobacco control. It also provides an opportunity to network with other tobacco treatment professionals from across the state. Attendance at the conference is required for those seeking the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Marc Steinberg
Dr. Steinberg is a clinical psychologist and the director of the Tobacco Research & Intervention lab. He is also Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Director, Division of Addiction Psychiatry at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
