USAT Requires SWIM START VERIFICATION. Follow flagging to SWIM ENTRANCE & CROSS MATS.
USAT rules require this procedure. Wetsuit use will be determined race morning per USAT rules.
Wet Suits WILL BE ALLOWED 78 DEGREES & under. Expected temp 78 - 80 degrees - Actual temp posted Thursday evening on ESM & race information pages. Rulings are always race morning.
DISPOSABLE TIMING CHIPS / STRAPS - We will be using disposable UHF timing chips / straps. These attach by adhesive to your left ankle WITH ENOUGH ROOM TO MOVE STRAP - do not put the adhesive strap on tightly. Strap will not be returned at finish of event. AGAIN, place strap on ankle WITH ENOUGH ROOM TO MOVE A LITTLE.
START INFORMATION - IN WATER START for ALL WAVES -
Swim caps provided must be worn. Keep all buoys to LEFT - follow flagging to transition after swim. Relays: Relay members change at bike rack. Rack with other bikes & follow same rules / routes as individual racers.
Warning: USAT has found many injuries / fatalities to be caused by failure to WARM UP prior to start. ALL ATHLETES are urged to WARM UP either on land or in the water prior to start. Early season Open Water Swims are notorious for a good SHOCK TO YOUR SYSTEM - Please warm up prior to start!
BIKE TRANSITION AND COURSE:

- Bike racks will be first come.
Transition opens 5 AM Sunday morning for racking.
All competitors will be going through the entire transition area.
NO RIDING IN THE TRANSITION AREA. Bike will be mounted and dismounted at the transition exit. Six (6) bikes per rack. Both bike courses are fairly flat & open to traffic - please proceed with caution. Please review attached map links and descriptions below.
NOTE: TRANSITION FLOW for 2019 - transition flow will be Swim In / Bike In & Bike Out / Run Out - this means you will enter transition from the swim & bike end near swim area & begin the bike and run at far end of parking lot -
Sprint cyclists will complete a simple out and back route with small loop at far end - Ed Hembree -Right on Broad (RR Tracks 1 mile up Broad) to turn-around loop just past 72 - RIGHT on S. Scott, LEFT @ County Park Road, LEFT on Broad & return same route to bike dismount - Stay to RIGHT & follow Police /volunteer directions.
Half Iron cyclist will follow same beginning route - continue on Broad to downtown Scottsboro - quick turns as follows: Appletree LEFT - 1 block - Andrews LEFT - cross Willow to LEFT on Mary Hunt - RIGHT on Market - LEFT on Maple & LEFT onto Rt. 21 - Rt. 21/470 approx. 6 miles to LEFT on Rt.33 - Rt.33 about 3 miles to RIGHT on Rt. 32 ( this is bottle drop /exchange corner - get 24 oz. Deer Park Sport Top Water Bottle - Rt. 32 - 3 miles to LEFT onto Rt. 42 - Rt. 42 - 5 miles to LEFT onto Rt. 45 - CAUTION: note RR tracks here - Rt. 45 - 2 miles to turnaround - return same route. Bottle drop exchange at miles 18 & 38. See course markings prior to event. Please stay to your right ENTIRE COURSE unless passing.
Course is open to traffic.
Half Bike Note of Caution: First & final 7.5 miles of bike travel through downtown Scottsboro - Police & volunteers will be in place but please use
EXTREME CAUTION as drivers do not always heed Police & volunteer direction. Out of Scottsboro, pretty rural, scenic & fairly flat to turn-around & back.
RUN Courses -
The Sprint run is completely within the Colony. Sprint racers will turn around at mile 1.55 just after campground entrance. Aid will be located at approx. .5 mi & 1.25 mi for four passings on the 5K.

Half Iron runners - Your route is as follows - same route as 5K past aid #1 & #2 - at aid # 2, runners will complete 2 complete loops & then return final 1.25 mi to finish - Loop Description: continue into campground & do "lollie-pop" circle at far end - return back to aid #2 & turn right across short grass section to Bob Jones Rd - follow bob Jones approx. 1 mile to RIGHT on Goose Pond Drive - stay in CONES CLOSED right lane approx. 1 mile to turn-around / timing point & return back same route to aid #2 to have number marked for lap 1 of 2 - lap 2 same - campground, back, Bob Jones, Goose Pond, turn-around, back to #2 & return to finish - DO NOT DO CAMPGROUND 3 X'S. Aid also on Bob Jones, Goose Pond & at turn-around each passing - Clif Chomps & Base Performance available. 17 total aid passings over 13.1 miles.
