Scripture Stewardship 2019

Dear Friend of Slash Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),

As a congregation, a living community of faith, we are blessed by God who gives "more than enough" for the needs of the abundant ministry entrusted to us. God freely gives. A few years ago, I heard a lesson about the Sabbath given by an Old Testament professor. The part that blew my mind is that the Sabbath was created to show God's abundance. God has given us so much that we don't have to work all the time. We have more than enough to take time to rest. That lesson helped me see God's abundance in the world.

Slash lives in God's abundance every week -- when we have over 20 children in Worship & Wonder, when we serve at Mission of Hope, as participation in all our small groups and classes grow. I looked at my Sunday School class last week and realized a third of the class is newer than me. And I've only been here five years! We've also seen loss in that same five years. And in that change, regular giving is lower than it used to be. Memorials and one-time gifts are bridging the gap, but our giving will not sustain the abundance of ministries we have now.

Over the next few weeks, you will hear stories and sermons about how God has given "more than enough." We are invited to respond to God's blessings and offer our covenant of giving cards. It will take about $10 more per week per family than we're currently giving as well as covenants from new givers to fund our 2020 ministries. As is said in our Disciples tradition, "we are the people we've been waiting for."

Through this stewardship campaign, we will choose the church we want to be. I hope you will be intentional about responding to this important invitation and offer your covenant of giving card by placing it in the offering plate, the box in the sanctuary, or in the mail by November 3rd. Your covenants make it possible for us to plan and implement ministry, mission and programs that help people grow in their faith and share God's love and presence in the world. We will dedicate our giving at the Holiday Luncheon on December 8th, after our congregational meeting.

Thank you for walking alongside of me as a part of Slash Christian Church (DOC).

Blessings,

Mark Highfield

The Thanksgiving Offering benefits the Colleges, Universities, Seminaries, and Divinity Houses affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Higher education has been an important focus for Disciples since the very beginning of the movement. Throughout our history, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning to educate students and form leaders to make a difference in the world.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education. Your gift to the Thanksgiving Offering helps support the education of thousands of students at our fifteen colleges and universities as well as our seven seminaries and divinity houses.

The Thanksgiving offering supports everything from scholarships, to religious life offices, to faculty growth and development and for scholarship and support for our theological education institutions. By giving to the Thanksgiving Offering you are helping our institutions invest in students as they prepare themselves to become leaders.  Please give generously to this offering. Your gift makes a difference in the lives of our students and it makes a difference in the world.

It is time to mail off all of our old Sunday School materials.  We mail them to Edwin L. Hodges Ministries in Alabama.  They in turn ship them to third world countries and use them for teaching and training of pastors and lay people.  They have asked for any Christian materials, books, DVD's, CD's, as long as they are in good condition.  They especially need bibles.  Please bring all materials to the Loving Building (room with the piano) by 12/1/19.  If you have any questions, please contact Betty Sue.

Dear Slash Christian Church,

On behalf of ACES, please accept my deepest appreciation for your very generous donation of $1250.00. It is an honor for our organization to have been chosen by you to receive this gift. Additionally, thank you for the abundance of food you recently collected for our pantry. In 2018 we helped 1,642 families and our drivers provided 849 one-way rides to seniors in our community who can no longer drive but who wish to remain in their own homes.  We are indeed blessed by your continued support!
With much gratefulness,
Bonnie Hoskin
