DURHAM, NC, June 2019 - As an ever-evolving and growing area, the Triangle J Council of Governments' region faces complex challenges that hinder the ability of
all residents from all communities to succeed. It is imperative that local governments and their partners identify and understand the interconnected systems and underlying forces in place that impact these challenges in order to adequately solve them. At the 2019 Triangle J Council of Governments Regional Summit on October 10th in Pittsboro, N.C., attendees will have the chance to do just that.
The summit, entitled "Rethinking Our Thinking" will be presented in two parts, with the morning focused on defining four of the region's most critical challenges and the afternoon focused on potential solutions to these challenges. Regional stakeholders will partake in a
Systems Thinking
workshop led by Michael Goodman, an internationally recognized speaker, author, and practitioner in the fields of systems thinking, organizational learning and social change.
The workshop will teach attendees the methodology of systems thinking, how to use it as a tool to create meaningful change, and how to examine four critical challenges for the TJCOG region -
regional transportation implementation; quality, affordable housing access; community resilience; and economic mobility -
in a new and holistic way. As an added benefit, attendees will be able to bring systems thinking and its toolkit back to their respective communities.
What are Key Characteristics of Systems Thinking?
- Seeing interrelationships, not things, and processes, not snapshots.
- Moving beyond blame.
- Focusing on small, well-focused actions to produce significant improvements.
- Avoiding solutions that address a symptom, rather than a problem.
Finding region-wide, comprehensive solutions is not an easy task. However, TJCOG is determined to help the region's local governments and the many other organizations working diligently to improve our communities rethink how to approach problems.
