Dr. Doreen Rao conducts the 2015 Serenade! mass choir at Strathmore
On Monday , July 8 , 2019 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts , Classical Movements ' 9th annual Serenade! Choral Festival will conclude with a truly grand finale: individual performances from all participating ensembles, as well the 2019 Serenade! mass choir , led by conductor, pedagogue, author and 2019 recipient of the Robert Shaw Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Choral Directors Association , Doreen Rao .
On the stage of the Kennedy Center 's Concert Hall , Dr. Rao will conduct her second Serenade! mass choir in the world premiere of a brand-new work by internationally lauded soprano, composer and Director of Vocal Studies at the University of Chicago , Patrice Michaels commissioned by Classical Movements’ own Eric Daniel Helms New Music Program .

For our third consecutive summer together, Classical Movements and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will co-present the Serenade! Choral Festival , inviting vocal ensembles of all kinds, the world over, to join us in Washington, D.C. for a deep, meaningful investigation into " The Human Journey: Music, Migration & Identity ."
Accompanied by two new travel companions—both National Geographic and the National Gallery of Art —Classical Movements and Kennedy Center won't be making our Serenade! sojourn alone.
From July 3-9 , 2019 , vocal ensembles from Mexico , Ecuador , Madagascar , Ghana , Germany , France , Canada and the United States will perform collaborative concerts and exchange cultures through shared workshops and side-by-side rehearsals with select community choral groups and youth choirs alike, all while participating in outreach and service projects across the Greater Washington, D.C. region.

Founded by Lucía Olmos in 2006, Túumben Paax ("New Music" in the Mayan language) have traversed the globe, from Florence to Fukushima , winning both awards and audiences for their pitch-perfect renditions of pre-Hispanic music, as well as the more than 40 new works specifically composed for this beguiling sextet's two-soprano, four-mezzo forces.
