On Safari Judging Change
Steven Corneille
was part of the judging panel for On Safari. Steven is a Bengal Cat breeder, Bengal Breed Committee member, TICA Allbreed Judge, Veterinary Technician, TICA Judge of the Year (2016) and friend to many. Steven is now Europe South Regional Director. TICA rules are currently interpreted, requiring the club to pay for judge's airfare and hotel despite TICA paying for his attendance to the Board of Director's meeting. Steven graciously allowed Fate Mays to take his place, reducing club & On Safari costs .
Next time Steven!
For 3 years in a row ZiggyDoo Ferris Cat Wheel has been a proud sponsor of TICA's Bengal Cat booth at Meet the Breeds and TICA's Beautiful Bengal Cat Calendar. Thank you Elizabeth.

A great wheel, a great company & great for Bengal (or any) Cats.

HCM
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common cardiac disease in cats worldwide. It is characterized by the increase in wall thickness of the left ventricle and the intraventricular septum, eventually leading to congestive heart failure.

Are any of these mutations present in Bengal Cats?
Find out at On Safari 2019.

In the Maine Coon, a point mutation (A31P) in the MYBPC3 gene has been found causative for the disease. The relative risk for developing HCM is around 1.8 in heterozygous cats and 18 in homozygous cats compared to Maine Coons negative for A31P. HCM has also been found in about 5.4% of cats negative for A31P, thus this mutation is not sole cause of HCM in Maine Coons.

In the Ragdoll, a point mutation (R820W) in the MYBPC3 gene has been found as causative for the disease. Most cats heterozygous (1-copy) for this mutation do not develop clinical signs, whereas homozygous (2-copies) are at high risk of developing severe HCM signs early in the life and shorter lifespan.

Multiple previously unknown genetic mutation candidates for HCM in domestic cats, all domestic cats = not breed specific, were presented at the 2019 Canine and Feline Genomics and Genetics Conference in Bern, Switzerland.

Support of Optimal Selection by Wisdom Health in TICA's Bengal Cat community increases knowledge of feline genetics and allows Wisdom Health to support research worldwide.

Karen Sausman of Kingsmark Bengals is on the Bengal Cat breed committee, has successfully bred and shown Andalusian Horses, Fox Terriers, Scottish Deerhounds and developed the Serengeti breed (while running a world class zoo & being an internationally recognized conservationist). Karen recommended this podcast for breeders of any species to better understand a standard, it's application to a breeding program and the cats in your own cattery. Click here

What is a fault in your breeding program? in the standard?

Charcoal in Championship?
July 2019 - TICA BG Breed Committee voted on a proposal from Meghan Waal to add a description of charcoal to the TICA standard, accepting all existing colors and patterns in charcoal. TICA rules & genetics committees are now reviewing (as well as the addition of Charcoal to the UCD). The Bengal Breed section will vote and if approved, TICA's board votes and charcoal could be championship by May 1, 2020.

Breed Committee Vote Tally:
Yes, add charcoal: Brooks, Corneille, Hutcherson, Sausman
No, do not add charcoal: Bangle, Faram, Shaw

Breed Committee comments:
I wanted to abstain, waiting for the reports from the Genetics Committee about whether Charcoal will be defined as a single gene, or as a combination of Apb & non-agouti. If it is a single gene, then I have no problem with the change. If it is a combination of Apb & non-agouti, it will mean that ALL non-agouti patterns will have to be accepted due to UCD 71.6 “The genetically anticipated product of any two recognized colors shall also be a recognized color for a given breed.” I do not want to be forced in to accepting solids/smokes without addressing that issue independently of Charcoal.
Jay Bangle

The unique phenotype of charcoal tabby has long been part of the Bengal Cat breed. For those attracted to the appearance of these cats a defined ideal is of value and the purpose of a standard. Known genetic causes and the means by which breeders may choose to perfect it or avoid it, are understood.
Anthony Hutcherson

I believe that we should recognize "charcoal" as a genetic based trait unique to the bengal breed in the same way that the Chausie breeders came to realize that the Grizzled Chausie was a positive and unique trait in their breed that should be recognized and cultivated.
Karen Sausman

I have no issues with charcoals. I think they are a benefit to many breeding progams as they contribute traits that are desireable to most breeders. My sole concern is the solids and what Pandora's box we may open without sufficient caution.
Kathy Shaw
