2019 Winter Report Card
Continuous School Improvement Plan
From the desk of the Administrator
Eric Kerns
Did you know that Faith Christian Academy has a plan for continuous school improvement? You may have seen information about this plan before. We have often shared at concerts or other venues about plans for improvements to facilities, academic programs, or other aspects of the school. Every five years we go through a process of “self-study” in preparation for our accreditation visit. Faith Christian Academy is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), the state of West Virginia, and our regional accrediting organization the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).

Our next accreditation visit is scheduled for the spring of 2021. That may seem like a long time from now, but it will roll around very quickly. The faculty and staff of Faith will spend the next 12-14 months preparing a self-study that will result in agreed upon strengths and areas needing improvement. We will do surveys of our families, students, staff, and alumni to determine what we do well and what areas need to improve.

Just a few of the many changes that have happened in the past as a result of these processes are:
  1. the addition of the gymnasium in 2005,
  2. the selection of new curricula across all grade levels,
  3. the addition of the instrumental music program,
  4. additional security measures, including procedures for after-care, and
  5. increasing our focus on science, technology, and math activities.

Currently the Continuous School Improvement Plan, which we abbreviate to CSIP, includes
  1. preparing a “Facilities Renovation Plan,”
  2. raising the base salary for teachers to $28,000 over a three year period,
  3. eliminating the mortgage debt so we can focus on the new campus,
  4. Increasing the use of technology in secondary classrooms, and
  5. Creating a plan for spiritual formation and assessment of students.

Our desire is to be constantly improving in all areas so that our students are prepared for the future and equipped to be leaders. We welcome your feedback any time, but please respond when a survey is sent out so that we have a healthy assessment of our strengths and areas for needed improvement. The school would also desire your prayers as we endeavor to accomplish the mission of “providing the highest quality academic and Biblical worldview training” for our students. We pray that our motto of “Training Students and Transforming Lives” is a reality as Jesus Christ works in the hearts and lives of students at Faith Christian Academy.
Student Representatives to the Berkeley County Council
Once again we will have several students participating in the honorary council member program in which high school students have the opportunity to sit in on and participate in our Berkeley County Council meeting. It is an excellent opportunity for our students to see firsthand how local government works. Students will be dismissed at 9 a.m. and return to school sometime around lunch time or shortly thereafter. Here are the students participating in the month of January.

  • January 16th - Luke Jones
  • January 23rd - Amanda DeOms
  • January 30th - Tori Waybright
Yearbook Class Addition
Mrs. Carper
For the 2019-20 school year, students were given the opportunity to select the yearbook class as an elective. Four ambitious and motivated juniors--Francesca Burgess, Hannah Canby, Emily Hott, and Jenna Oakley-- selected the class as an elective. Under the expertise and experience of Mrs. Williams and the supervision of Mrs. Carper, the students have been planning, designing, taking pictures, and composing the yearbook for 2019-20. Much work remains to be accomplished to produce the yearbook that reflects the life and activities of Faith Christian Academy; however, these young ladies definitely demonstrate the commitment and ability to complete the task before them.

Missions Trip to Guatamala
Exciting things are happening and the Lord is using our students all around the world. This spring Abigail Adams, Hannah Canby, Emily Boehler, Brandt Turner, Jenna Oakley and Alum Clayton Canby will be heading to Guatemala with their team. They will be helping to build two houses, take school supplies, volunteer at a local school and deliver 40 well filtration systems to give Guatemalians clean water. It is so wonderful to see how the Lord continues to use our students to help others who have never heard the gospel.
From the Desk Of Mrs. Cooper
The FCA library has joined the 21st century! We have purchased a library program that uses bar codes for circulating books. Several parent volunteers are busy adding bar codes to our existing books. (Thank you April Byers, Debby Drust, Mistie Haddix, and Melody Engler!) While it is still a work in progress, you are now able to search the catalog from home. Go to the library website at  https://shericooper.wixsite.com/fcalibrary  and click the Library Catalog button. While you are on the library website, check out the research links and recommendations for students in elementary, middle school and high school.
Speaking of middle school and high school, the library is now open on Tuesdays at lunch for secondary students. A number of middle school students have taken advantage of that time to check out books, read, build amazing Lego creations, and visit with the librarian. If your child has already read their Christmas gift books, get ready for our online book fair through February 21; we are using a Christian book fair company this year. The theme is "Mission Code Breaker" based on Philippians 2:5-7. There is even a contest, which can be found in their book fair flyer. Help your child check it out at  https://i55bookfairs.com/flyer/  and enter the contest! To place an order, go to this link:  https://i55bookfairs.com/supportmyschool/ . Orders can be delivered to the school so you do not have to pay shipping .
Community Helper Project
Mrs. Michael's Class
Every year our 5th grade class participates with the 167th Air National Guard for their Community Helper Project. At Christmas time they prepared 200 hot chocolate treats to be handed out for their family day at the base. This will be the fifth year for 5th grade partnering with the 167th Air Wing.
30th Annual Clued In Auction
Were You Clued In?

It was a wonderful evening raising money for our school. We had over 150 items between the live and silent auction. Mason Auction Services did a wonderful job again this year helping us to exceed our goal. We were able to raise over $26,000. The evening was concluded with a visit from Detective Clueso a/k/a Melody Engler. He came to reveal the suspect and arrest them, but to his dismay Mrs. Mann had made her getaway before he could apprehend her.

Thank you to our presenting sponsor Ark Animal Clinic for generously agreeing to sponsor our event again this year. Thank you to everyone who attended, donated items and volunteered their time. It was another successful auction!

Message from Maintenance
Mr. Moore
There is always something on the maintenance list. As a homeowner we can all attest to that statement. The same is true for our school. Below are some areas that need attention at the school. We thought we would reach out to our families to see if anyone would be willing to lend a hand with these small repairs. assistance.

Odd & End Repairs:

  • Roof repairs
  • Chain link fence repair
  • Drywall repairs
  • Miscellaneous painting

If you are interested in lending a hand call Mr. Moore at 304-283-0061. Thanks!

Thank you to Chris Cooper for welding new volleyball inserts for our floor! It saved us thousands of dollars!

Leadership Berkeley Tours Faith Campus
On December 17th our school was asked to give a tour of our campus to the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Berkeley Class. The Leadership Berkeley Class is made up of local leaders in our community that either own or run businesses in the Eastern Panhandle. We conducted 5 tours with groups of six. We had three seniors from our Interact Club lead three of these groups. It was a huge success! As the tours concluded our Choir lead by Ms. Mann did a beautiful send off with "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". Click here to see the video.

Fall Sports Wrap Up
Coach Hobbs
The mission of the Faith Christian Academy athletic department is to teach our student-athletes to glorify God and never quit. We were blessed with another successful fall season working toward this mission. The athletic department offered middle school teams for boys soccer and girls volleyball. We were blessed to have enough athletes come out that we were able to offer A and B games for both teams. For our high schoolers, we fielded teams for JV and Varsity girls volleyball as well as varsity boys soccer. In total, 70 students played on athletic teams this fall. All of our teams competed and represented Faith Christian Academy well this year.

Specifically, our varsity girls volleyball team posted one of the best seasons in school history, winning 5 straight matches at one point in the season and finishing their season by taking a trip to Cedarville, Ohio to compete in the NCSAA Volleyball Championships. After a competitive round in pool play, the girls won their bracket to bring home the first volleyball banner in school history to hang in the gym! From an excerpt in an article in the Journal:

“It was very exciting to be a part of,” Faith volleyball coach Sarah Michael said.
With six seniors on the team — players who have helped develop the program to this point — Michael was happy to see them have a chance to be a part of the historic event.
“It’s so exciting to see them be a part of the first banner in school history,” she said. “To see them rally and get a win was really exciting. Those girls have gone (to the tournament) the past four years.”

After picking up a win late in pool play, the Falcons swept action on Saturday, and the team pushed the championship to three games, rallying for the win.
“We played some teams from much larger Christian schools than us,” Michael said, noting one of the teams the Falcons faced in pool play went on to win a higher division, something that particular team has done for several years now.
Participating the last four years in the tournament, the Falcons didn’t place in their initial appearance. However, the last few years, they’ve brought home second place. To pull out the win, highlighted by the senior class, meant a lot to Michael and the team. Seniors Deanna Hercules, Abigail Adams and Emily Boehler all earned all-tournament honors, leading the team.
“It was really excited to see all their hard work come to fruition,” Michael said. “I’m super proud. I’ve been working with them the last two years, but I’ve known them personally a while.” (J. Wilt, The Journal. Nov 1, 2019 )

Special thanks to our coaches Angie Timberlake (MS A and B girls volleyball), Sarah Michael (JV and varsity girls volleyball), Jason Swinehart (MS A and B boys soccer), and Brock Keppley (varsity boys soccer)
