Virtual Learning Resources for Parents, Teachers, and Homeschool Families
Though the back-to-school season occurs each fall, this year is unlike anything that has been experienced before. The 2020-2021 school year will present new challenges for families and teachers alike, whether youth are returning to school in the classroom, online or at home.
To support teachers, parents and homeschool families in their educational efforts, MSU Extension is compiling a list of helpful resources that can be used by varying audiences to supplement school plans. Arranged by audience, grade level and topic, a variety of resources will be available in differing delivery methods. While not all tools utilize school standards, many do.

Our 2019-2020 4-H year is at an end, which means it is time to start considering the 2020-2021 program year which begins September 1. There are a few changes with the new year:
-
No 4-H Participation Fee. The 4-H Participation Fee of $20/youth or $60/family has been waived for the 2020-2021 program year. Families do not have to pay this fee to join 4-H. Clubs and individual experiences may still have a registration fee. All 4-H members and volunteers must still enroll in the program.
-
4HOnline is getting an upgrade! Our state is being introduced into 4HOnline 2.0 in a few weeks. Everyone who was enrolled (active status in the current 4HOnline) in the 2019-2020 program year will have their data transferred to 2.0 to complete re-enrollment for this new year. The current system will be shut down from August 27 until approximately September 14 to allow for this data transfer. If you are looking to enroll in 4-H for the 2020-2021 program year, please follow instructions that will be sent toward the end of September.
-
4-H programs are virtual until further notice. All 4-H programs, including clubs meetings, project meetings, workshops, and activities, are to be virtual until further notice. This includes cohorts that typically meet in the name of 4-H and are attempting to meet outside the 4-H name. Virtual meetings and activities are supported and encouraged. If your club needs help with ideas, brainstorming, or tips, please email oosterh6@msu.edu!
If you have questions about either of these changes, please email oosterh6@msu.edu.

Re-enrollment information for Volunteers
Volunteers this year will have two steps to their re-enrollment, as outlined below:
-
4HOnline2.0 profile re-enrollment - due by November 15. Information regarding these instructions will be sent with the new instructions about 4HOnline2.0 in mid-September, but will be similar to past years. You will not be able to start this step until mid-September but may have to complete part two (Volunteer Central) before then!
-
Volunteer Central background check and code of conduct - due by the date you completed your background check last year. Last year, all volunteers were required to submit a background check request through backgroundchecks.com. This year, this process will be facilitated by Volunteer Central.
-
Part One: Log into your Volunteer Central account to check your access and edit profile information. Emails regarding how to log in and what information you need to edit were sent from the system in mid-June. If you did not receive this email, please email oosterh6@msu.edu to request a resend. This step can be done at any time but the necessary profile edits are required prior to submitting your background check in part two.
-
Part Two: Volunteers will receive an email from the system 30 days before their background check is due (date varies depending on when the volunteer submitted the background check last year). Example: You submitted your check on 11/1/2019; you will receive an email on 10/2/2020 with instructions and will have until 11/1/2020 to submit your new background check. The email will include instructions on logging into your profile, submitting the check, and re-signing the code of conduct. Reminder emails to those who haven't done the check will also be sent from the system up until 1 day before the check is due. Volunteers who do not complete this step by their due date will be required to re-complete the entire Volunteer Selection Process in order to remain a volunteer, regardless of 4HOnline enrollment status at that time.

Now that we are at the end of our 4-H program year, now is the time to begin thinking about nominating and submitting awards for youth and volunteers for all of your hard work this past 4-H year! 4-H Council voted to extend the deadline for county 4-H awards to November 15, 2020 and offer the option to submit awards online via Google Forms. Council also voted that leader signatures are not required this year to reduce barriers for applying. If you have trouble with the website or Google Forms, please email oosterh6@msu.edu for a PDF of the application you need. The 4-H Participation Celebration awards banquet will be held in late February/early March (may be virtual depending on program guidelines at that time).

Explore your leadership skills with the 2020 Women's Leadership Institute!
|
Youth ages 13-19 are invited to learn from strong women leaders while exploring their own leadership skills at the 2020 MSU Women’s Leadership Institute. This two-day event will begin on September 10 when attendees (open to anyone of any age) join an interactive webinar to hear from women leaders working at the intersection of health and wellness—including on the front lines of health care during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Learn how the different leadership types responded during times of crisis, and how they’re promoting health and wellness at this critical time.
On September 14, youth participants will take part in the second portion of this event, which is reserved just for teens. During this virtual session, youth will discuss the Day 1 speakers and their own leadership challenges and successes.
Each event will be hosted from 6-8 p.m. Although featuring women leaders, the Women’s Leadership Institute is a great opportunity for youth of any gender to learn more about leadership. Register at www.canr.msu.edu/events/women-s-leadership-institute-2020 or contact Roxanne Turner (turnerr@msu.edu or 517-546-3950) or Darren Bagley (bagleyda@msu.edu or 810-244-8515) for more information.
