LISTENING TO THE HEARTBEAT OF GOD
FROM PASTOR LAWRENCE
Blessed are…
is a refrain that begins one of the most familiar passages in scripture.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
(Matthew 5:1-12)
While these phrases may be very familiar to our ears, have they touched our hearts? Have they reoriented our mindset from today’s prevailing values and toward the gospel message?
As we journey through Lent toward Easter, our congregation will engage the Beatitudes through worship, study, and the arts. We will take time to plumb the depths of the Beatitudes in the very best of the Latin tradition of
fides quaerens intellectum
or
faith seeking understanding.

FROM PASTOR MARC’s DESK
By the time you read this article there’s a decent chance that I will be preparing to depart for Jerusalem on the Mosaic of Peace Conference with the Presbyterian Mission Agency led by Carl Horton. I may have already boarded the plane. I may be walking on the other side of the earth even as we speak. Some of you had the opportunity to experience this remarkable journey to the Holy Land with Pastor Lawrence in 2018. For those of you who (like me) were unfamiliar with this experience until recently, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) website describes it as an opportunity to...

FEBURARY SESSION MINUTES
Opening devotions were led by Pastor Marc. The theme centered around the concept that many people lead isolated lives, whether by choice or by chance, and that all need to “Be a Friend’. Reaching out to others, being a neighbor, changing our attitudes to be loving and caring makes for fulfillment.
The Annual Statistical Report and the Clerk’s Annual Questionnaire were approved.
A gift of $22,000 from Jo Reinhart, to complete funding needs for the handicap accessible bathroom in the Memorial Building, was accepted.
Updated position descriptions for the sexton and the financial secretary were approved.
Approval was given for the trustees to enter into a contract with IVideo Technologies for an upgrade to the AV system to the Memorial Sanctuary. Funding is in place.
The Membership, Evangelism and Fellowship Committee is examining their role in the life of OPC, examining what is working, what is no longer effective and where can innovations be made.
Christian Education Committee is delighted to have Elliott Boyle serve as the new Youth Director.

COMMITTEES OF SESSION
Highlights
Worship and Music: Take Five
Discussed the details of the Committee’s 2020 budget.
Began a review of the goals and objectives of the Time with Young Disciples element of Sunday morning worship.
Completed planning for the Ash Wednesday service and began planning for Holy Week services.
Stewardship and Finance: Take Five
Nick Fears has done an incredible job of taking on the Financial Secretary duties while we work to fill this position permanently. He has taken on this responsibility just in time to take care of the year end financial reporting, the giving statements, and setting up QuickBooks for 2020 on top of all of the other usual finance tasks - while still holding his regular full time position outside of this church – and clearing our sidewalks and all of the other volunteer tasks that Nick does for us. Thank you!

INTRODUCING THE THIRD THIRTY
A relatively new element of Older Adult Ministry is "Third Thirty" programming. The term references the stage of life of those who are 60 years of age and onward, following the first third (ages 25-30) and the second third (ages 30-60). These thirds have life experiences unique to their age groups and a common fellowship among those in a particular third can provide meaningful connections and opportunities for engagement.
OPC's Membership, Evangelism and Fellowship Committee is excited to introduce this initiative to the congregation and invites our "third thirty" (those who are 60 years of age and onward) to gather for informal and interactive conversations. These gatherings will offer fellowship in comfortable group settings to discuss issues that arise in our lives today and those we might anticipate to come. Participants can share experiences, express joys and perhaps, concerns of aging, as well as investigate issues that the group itself identifies for further discussion. We envision these gatherings to be occasional, as determined by the participants.
The inaugural meeting of the Third Thirty will take place after worship on Sunday, March 29, at 11:30 in the Seminary. We will offer a light lunch and starter ideas for discussions and look forward to suggestions for future conversations.
Please mark your calendars to join fellow "Third Thirty-ers" on Sunday, March 29. Let's move forward together to explore the challenges ahead and enjoy fellowship with one another!

COLOMBIAN CONNECTIONS
I was musing over some of our past connections with the country of Colombia and thought I should share some of my memories with you. I remember Mary Dodd Hunter who was a champion of Mission and Outreach in our congregation teaching us to spell the country Colombia with an “o” and not a “u” as in Columbia.
I remember Alexander Steffanell and his wife Carmen Guerrera attending our church while they were Miami University students. Alexander had come to Oxford as a representative of the Seventh Church in Barranquilla to seal our partnership with our sister church.

A gritty, unsentimental film about spiritual and economic poverty, told from the point of view of children living in a rundown motel in the shadow of Disney World. While
The Florida Project
is a tough film it has moments of humor and grace. Willem DaFoe was nominated for an Oscar for his role as the motel manager.

March 8, 2020:
Philomena

Matthew 5:6-7 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled, blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.
March 22, 2020:
Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
PG (for some strong thematic material, a brief fight, and some mild language)
Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America's most beloved neighbor.
Matthew 5:8-9 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
March 29, 2020:
First Reformed
R (for some disturbing violent images)
Reverend Ernst Toller is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent megachurch. When a young woman who has grown up in the church asks for help with her radical husband, Toller finds himself drawn into a lonely struggle against oncoming disaster.
Matthew 5:10-11 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

MISSION AND OUTREACH
Spotlight on:
Habitat for Humanity
In 2018 OPC, with sponsorship of Mission and Outreach, donated $8000 to Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with the Oxford Faith Build, to construct homes on Carter Court and Fuller Way (both streets off of Hester Road). The most recent homes - at 707 and 709 Fuller Way - were dedicated on May 4, 2019, with the two families joyfully receiving their house keys.
In addition to monetary support, OPC provided sweat equity by volunteering on site and supplying lunches.
As of now, building is at a stand still, due to lack of funding, even though Oxford Habitat has 8 more available plots of land.
Our OPC Habitat roots run deep as former youth participated in numerous Habitat projects, in South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana.

This is the first in a series of articles to spotlight those organizations, charities, and groups which OPC supports through its Mission and Outreach committee.

UPDATE FROM TOPSS
February 17, 2020
The Mission and Outreach Committee of Oxford Presbyterian Church
Friends at Oxford Presbyterian Church:
Greetings. I last wrote you on January 6, 2020. Since then, I have had an opportunity to complete my databases for 2019 food and volunteer hour donations to TOPSS. So, I wanted to begin my update letter with a sincere thank you for the considerable generosity of your congregation. I know you allot a certain amount of money each month to a significant donation. During the last few months, I have asked for donations of cold cereal and oatmeal, because those are basic grain staples that are expensive for us to buy, and personal items, such as shampoo and feminine hygiene products, because our customers are unable to purchase those with SNAP benefits. During calendar year 2019, your congregation donated 4,036 pounds of food and personal items, which is about 3% of total donations. We are so grateful for your generosity and continuing commitment.

WHAT IS MAUNDY THURSDAY AND WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT?
Maundy Thursday. also referred to as Holy Thursday is observed during Holy Week on the Thursday before Easter.
Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper
when Jesus shared the Passover meal with His disciples on the night before He was crucified.
The word “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word mandatum, or “mandate.”

CAROL AND THE KIDS
I was so busy cartooning with the other 6 kids that I forgot to take pictures. However, I’m still able to send you a snippet about our time together.
So, take 6 awesome kiddos, mix them with an artist/cartoonist/teacher and me and what do you get? Laughter, silliness, joy, and a big dose of creativity.
Mr. Bill [Jenkins] started our time together by checking in on our levels of creativity. I smiled to myself because I’m privileged to know these children and that not a one lacks in creativity.
After taking us through the basics: a sunny flower and simple bear, we moved into cartooning for real, a cowboy with a five-o’clock shadow and even the big cheese himself, Mickey.
The cartoons were as unique and lovely as each child who created them. What a joy it was for Mr. Bill, who assured us he’ll be with us again, and for me who can hardly wait for the next time.

MARCH MAYBES
In 2020, the spring equinox (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox) falls on Thursday, March 19.
Observe nature around you!
Are the worms emerging from the earth? (The March Full Moon is called the Full Worm Moon for this very reason!)
Are you noticing that the days are getting longer? Did you know that the increasing sunlight is what triggers birds to sing?
Watch the arc of the Sun across the sky as it shifts toward the north. Birds are migrating northward, along with the path of the Sun.
Six Word Advice
Listen listen listen listen…then talk.
Show up. You can sleep later.
It’s hard to hate up close.
Except with dynamite, caution is overrated.
Visit Grandma every chance you get.
QUESTION OF THE MONTH
I am a fruit, I am a bird, and I am a person. What am I?
Find the answer hidden somewhere in the newsletter. And while you are reading, mark your calendar for all the upcoming events!!!!!
(Last six word advice: Don’t use too many exclamation points.)
