John Cleary Shares His Belief in the Importance of Professional Liability Insurance
As Co-Owner of IFTA (Interactive Fitness Trainers of America) people are continually asking me about liability and whether or not it is important to have insurance.
IFTA is over 25 years old with thousands of Personal Trainers and Group Fitness Instructors Certified through our company. This means that nearly every week of the year, IFTA's presenters have the opportunity to give out valuable fitness information and training to various groups of people all over the U.S. and abroad.
One of the most valuable pieces of info we share is the importance of holding professional liability insurance and making sure it doesn't expire. I cannot tell you how many times we have received calls from someone investigating a "situation" that has happened with one of our Certified members. The first thing we do is hope that they have kept their IFTA Certification current. The second thought is always us wondering if they have professional liability insurance.
Sports & Fitness Insurance Corporation (SFIC) holds the keys to your peace of mind regarding this issue. It is very inexpensive and yet so worth it. In IFTA's opinion holding a current Fitness Certification (preferably IFTA) and Liability Insurance (preferably SFIC) makes you the trainer...the full professional package. There's nothing holding you back from being successful while you help others achieve their fitness goals.
For over 20 years, after meeting, Glynne Simpson, the founder and owner of SFIC in my travels, our companies formed a bond that remains today. In other words, I trust SFIC. So my answer to their question from the beginning of this article is an absolute "Yes". You must have professional liability insurance in order to succeed in this business.
