Mark your calendars! RI C-AIM's 2020 Research Symposium will be held on Monday, April 6, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the University of Rhode Island's Memorial Union. An agenda and further details will be forthcoming.

2020 SURF-Still Time to Apply!

Applications for our 2020 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) are being accepted until Friday, Feb. 7!

Undergraduates from RI C-AIM's eight partner institutions are encouraged to apply for this intensive, 10-week introduction to scientific research.

2020 RI C-AIM Vis-a-Thon

In collaboration with The Nature Lab @RISD , the 2020 Vis-a-Thon aims to promote visualization as an integral facet of research methodology and provide opportunities for participants to experiment with innovative ways to create and effectively utilize visual imagery and language.

The Vis-a-Thon is open to any undergraduate, graduate student or post-doc conducting RI C-AIM-related research at a  partner institution.

Teresa Mako, URI
Last month, University of Rhode Island and RI C-AIM student Teresa Mako successfully defended her doctoral thesis, "Dual Detection of Nitrite and Nitrate in Aquatic Environments Using Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices," advised by Dr. Mindy Levine. Congratulations!

Olympus Image of the Year Competition
Submissions due by Friday, Jan. 31, 2020

Olympus is continuing to search for the best light microscopy images in 2019—this time on a global scale. Olympus’ first Image of the Year Global Life Science Light Microscopy Award recognizes the very best in life science imaging worldwide.

Participants can win a CX43 microscope with DP27 digital camera, X Line objectives or an OM-D E-M5 Mark II camera.

The News
New Year, New Faces @RI C-AIM

Dr. Maia joins us as RI C-AIM's new institutional lead for Rhode Island College. As assistant professor of Biology, her research focuses on fish biomechanics in light of habitat changes. She has also served as a 2019 SURF mentor.


Dr. Davies joins as operating manager of RI C-AIM's Bay Observatory , and is visiting associate professor at URI's College of Environmental & Life Sciences. His research focuses on Intertidal and deep-sea ecology.

Patricia Thibodeau

Having recently received her Ph.D from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Dr. Thibodeau joins C-AIM as a postdoctoral fellow of coastal marine plankton ecology in Dr. Tatiana Rynearson's lab.

Sea urchins, the next commercially viable species?
URI and RI C-AIM researcher Dr. Coleen Suckling explains her work on Atlantic purple sea urchins as a potential industry for consumption.

Her research features in the Westerly Sun, EcoRI News & URI Communications. Congrats!
