The state of Wisconsin has tremendous capacity for scientific discovery, transformative research advances, and technological innovation. The Forward BIO Institute works to catalyze innovation in biomanufacturing research through interdisciplinary collaboration, with the goal of “catapulting” technologies out of university and into the private sector. To support this mission, the Institute established the Catapult program to support the effective translation of new, transformative discoveries into technologies with commercial impact.
The program identifies high value technologies, and creates value propositions and preliminary business cases for these breakthroughs. Employing a milestone-driven, project management philosophy, Catapult synthesizes a technology maturation roadmap, tailored to the specific technology, to prioritize progressive business, legal, regulatory, and technical development objectives. Engagement with the program introduces the innovation team members to industry best practices and expands their network within UW-Madison and the greater Madison entrepreneurial ecosystem. Participation in Catapult also engages the innovation team with the Institute’s Industry Consortium partners, enabling opportunities for sponsored projects and collaborations.
