Milisits Is Named Winner of 2020
Michael L. Stone Award
Michael J. Trepal, DPM, FACFAS, VP of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean, announced on November 3rd that Thomas Milisits (2021) is NYCPM’s winner of this year’s Michael L. Stone Outstanding Professional Conduct Award, presented by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS). The annual award is named after the late Michael L. Stone, DPM, a past president of ABFAS, and is presented each year to one graduating senior from each of the country’s nine podiatric medical schools who exemplifies the highest standard of professionalism, deportment, and ethics in interactions with peers, patients, professors, and staff. Each award includes a recognition plaque and a cash award. In addition, the ABFAS Board of Directors pays recipients’ meeting registration fees, hotel and travel expenses. Mr. Milisits is scheduled to receive his award in person at the annual ABFAS meeting held in Las Vegas next May; the award will be presented virtually if coronavirus protocols so dictate.

“Hybrid” Schuster Seminar Draws Record Attendance for Biomechanics Presentations
NYCPM’s eighth annual Richard O. Schuster, DPM, Memorial Biomechanics Seminar was offered on November 7th and 8th as both an on-site conference and online; most of the record 150 attendees chose to attend virtually. A majority of the presentations were made virtually as well, by notable biomechanics experts located across the country and internationally; six speakers chose to present live at NYCPM. The seminar was coordinated and chaired by Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, a professor and past chair of the department of orthopedics and biomechanics at NYCPM, and was made possible by a significant contribution from a grateful patient of Dr. D’Amico who was cured of his persistent heel pain.

Brooklyn native Dr. Margarita Presman attended Baruch College as an undergrad, switching her major from finance to bio/pre-med toward the end of her studies there. She entered NYCPM directly after college in 2008 and graduated in 2012 with her DPM degree. She went on to complete a three-year Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Residency with Reconstructive Rearfoot & Ankle Certification at The Mount Sinai Hospital in 2015.

Backpacks Filled with the Joy of Giving (and School Supplies) Delivered to FCNY for Pediatric Patients
On November 5, members of Armonk, NY’s Heavenly Productions Foundation (HPF) delivered 150 backpacks filled with school supplies for pediatric patients of the Foot Center of New York (FCNY) in East Harlem, and presented them to Eunice Ramsey-Parker, DPM (‘85), MPH, Clinic Administrator and to Joel Sturm, COO and VP Administration for NYCPM/FCNY. First Harlem Sole 5K Raises Funds for the DEP at Metropolitan Hospital
On September 5th, 2020, The Pinkett Foundation (TPF), a 501c3 philanthropy founded by 2023 student Damien Pinkett, MPH, MS, partnered with NYCPM’s SNPMA chapter to host the first annual Harlem Sole 5K, a race dedicated to raising funds to combat diabetes, raise awareness, and increase prevention and education in Harlem, NYCPM’s home: a city in which the disease disproportionately affects the African-American community and exacts a horrific toll.
Originally intended to be a physical race in Riverbank State Park, the race was run virtually. Mr. Pinkett worked with students John Harris (2023), Jenee Gooden (2022), Stephan Joseph (2022), Sharisse Victor (2022), Janet Isaiah (2022) and Jennifer Alegun (2022), and with the help of 23 runners, three donors, and the Custom Ink company (producer of the race’s fundraising T-shirts), the Harlem Sole 5K raised $347.40 for the Diabetic . . . (Separate) Manuscripts
for JFAS
Both a student, Kayla Neville (2023), left, and a faculty member, Elizabeth Bonarigo, DPM, right, have published (separate) manuscripts in The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery (JFAS), and both studies were co-authored with NYCPM alumni.
A manuscript co-authored by Kayla Neville (2023) was published on October 22 in The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery (JFAS). Entitled "Epidemiological Survey of the Impact of COVID-19 on Telemedicine in the Practice of Foot and Ankle Surgery in the United States," the manuscript was written with Alexandra Black, DPM (2018), a resident at Lenox Hill, and Robert Fridman, DPM (2002), affiliated with Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Rural Alaska Helped by Dr. Sheikh
Reem Sheikh, DPM, DABPM, AACFAS, faculty in the NYCPM department of surgery, is an attending podiatrist at New York City’s Harlem, Metropolitan and Lincoln Hospitals and the Foot Clinics of New York. In the autumn, she won a University of Alaska Anchorage 2020 Emerging Leader Alumni of Distinction Award for the personal protective equipment campaign she organized for health care workers and several organizations in New York City and Anchorage.
More recently, she is leading efforts to help Alaskan villages: “Alaska had the warning, they had the time. This should not be happening.” To date, Dr. Sheikh, who grew up in that state, and her team have sent masks to more than 10 rural Alaskan villages, in addition to health care workers in the state. Last summer, they sent almost 5,000 masks and other PPE to Anchorage. She and other volunteers use social media to spread the word on Facebook groups, including Rural Alaska COVID-19 Alliance and Alaska COVID Response.

NBPME Part III Results Announced
On December 2, 2020, Dean Michael J. Trepal, DPM announced that 32 NYCPM grads had taken the Part III NBPME exam, and 100% passed! Test takers were from the Classes of 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, and 1978.

Sports Medicine Club Provides Community Care
On Saturday December 12, three members of the NYCPM Sports Medicine Club joined with members of Graffiti 2 Community Ministries, which is based at St. Paul Evangelical Reformed Church on East 141st Street in the Bronx, to distribute winter clothes, foods that are easy to prepare and/or have long shelf lives, and fresh breakfast sandwiches, to the community. The “Stop and Care Volunteers” event included, left to right (in photo below) in blue T-shirts, members of the Sports Medicine Club: Anthony Castronova (2024; Class Representative), Will Stallings (2023; President-elect of Student Association), Paul Jicman (2023; Research Coordinator). APMWA Announces Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 35th Annual Student Writing Competition.
• All papers must be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, or any topic suitable for a lay publication.
• There is no word limit. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
• First prize: one thousand dollars ($1,000). Second prize: seven hundred fifty dollars ($750). Third prize: five hundred dollars ($500). Prizes sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.
• This competition is open to any enrolled podiatric student.
• Entries become the property of APMWA, which may arrange publication of the entry.
