Commuter Rail Industry Achieves PTC Certification
|
Every required commuter railroad is now Positive Train Control (PTC) certified by FRA and has met the Dec. 31, 2020 implementation deadline set by Congress, according to APTA. PTC is a complex signaling and communications technology that provides critical safety redundancies to already safe commuter rail services.

2021 Is the Start of Transit’s New and Different Future
|
 The start of every new calendar year brings predictions about the challenges and opportunities ahead. This year, however, our ability to turn trends into triumphs will build on what we learned and what we accomplished in 2020.
2021’s prognostications carry with them intrinsic optimism. January brings the inauguration of a new president, the swearing-in of a new Congress, and the broad national roll-out of coronavirus vaccines—all of which have crucial implications for public transportation.

Moynihan Train Hall in New York City Opens
|
The Moynihan Train Hall, a 255,000-square-foot facility in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, is now open, transforming the more than 100-year-old James A. Farley Building into a hub that increases the Penn Station rail complex’s concourse space by 50 percent. The hall is named for former U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

USDOT Secretary Chao Announces Resignation
|
USDOT Secretary Elaine L. Chao has announced her resignation, effective Jan. 11, in response to the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, an event she described as “traumatic and entirely avoidable.” She said, “It has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.” Chao has served as secretary since Jan. 2017. On Dec. 15, APTA congratulated Mayor Pete Buttigieg on his nomination as secretary of transportation and pledged to work with him.

Bombardier to Supply 205 Rail Cars for TransLink’s SkyTrain
|
Bombardier Transportation has signed a contract with TransLink to supply 205 new rail cars for the agency’s SkyTrain network in Vancouver. The contract is valued at $721 million CAD (565 million US) and includes options for up to 400 additional rail cars.

FTA Publishes New Reports on Bus Crash Energy Management
FTA and the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida are researching areas of public transit safety risk to identify existing standards and recommended practices and to establish the need for additional such standards and guidance.

APTA Appoints Doyle Interim Vice President, Communications & Marketing
|
APTA has appointed T.J. Doyle as interim vice president, communications & marketing department. He succeeds Rosemary Sheridan, who held the position for nearly 23 years and who recently retired.
Doyle joined APTA in July 2019 as director of advocacy communications, following 20 years in association communications and marketing.

| The Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD), Springfield, IL, Board of Trustees has named Deputy Managing Director Steve Schoeffel as managing director. Schoeffel takes over following the retirement of Frank Squires, who has managed the agency since 2012.

LA Metro Arts & Design’s new exhibition and catalog of photographs by Ken Karagozian provides a glimpse into the otherworldly environment of Los Angeles subway construction over the last three decades. Titled “Deep Connections,” twelve immense, black and white photographs are featured in the historic Union Station Passageway Gallery lightboxes until the summer of 2021.
