Sokol SF Newsletter - February 2021
|
|
Dear Friends of Sokol,
Welcome to our monthly newsletter to inform you about Sokol SF news, milestones, activities, and events. It seems that the restricted rules in California are expected to be lifted soon so we can start organizing our regular activities, meetings, and gatherings in person again.
We've had one hike so far at Redwood Regional Park on January 16th and we started physical exercise classes via Zoom for our members under the leadership of our enthusiastic Sokol SF volunteer, Renata.
We will be continuing with our virtual Speaker Series Event on March 11th and we are thrilled to announce our next speaker will be the new Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles, Ambassador Jaroslav Olsa, Jr. See our event announcement below and stay tuned for registration. We also plan to have an egg decorating demonstration at the end of March. Join us for one or both!
Wishing you to stay safe, healthy, and positive.

Sat 2/20 Hike @ Little Yosemite
Sunol Regional Wilderness Preserve
|
|
Join us on our next hike in the "Getting to know Bay Area Better" series at Little Yosemite @ Sunol Regional Wilderness Preserve at 895 Geary Rd., Sunol, CA. Dogs on leash are welcome to attend.
We will meet at 8:00am in front of the above Skyline Gate sign. Our walk will commence promptly at 8:10am. We are planning on hiking a 2.2 mile loop. Those who are more adventurous can continue on a 4.8 mile loop. Parking is $5.00 per vehicle and there is plenty of parking. Once you enter the park travel as far East as possible and park by the trailhead entrance. A restroom building is immediately adjacent to the trailhead.
For planning purposes, the park entrance is a good 15 minutes off the 680 freeway exit so allow sufficient time to reach the park, locate the group, and get settled. Cell phone coverage is minimal in both the parking lot and on the trail. Bring water, sunscreen, and your Sokol face mask.
Public Safety: All county COVID-19 protocols remain in place, including maintaining a social distance of 6' & mandatory face coverings when this is not possible. Please bring your own face coverings & hand sanitizer. Help us keep the park safe by following the local public safety orders.

Ambassador Jaroslav Olša

From the Czech Consulate in Los Angeles Facebook Page:
The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles is delighted to introduce the new head of our mission, Consul General Ambassador Jaroslav Olsa Jr. (*1964)
In almost three decades in the Czech diplomatic service, he served as Ambassador to Zimbabwe (2000-2006), the Republic of Korea (2008-2014), and the Philippines (2014-2018). He has received multiple awards including the 2011 Palmer Prize for Diplomats for his contribution to the advancement of democracy in Zimbabwe. Before joining the diplomatic service in 1992, he was a founding father and a deputy editor-in-chief of the Czech Republic's science fiction monthly magazine Ikarie, still being published as XB-1.
Ambassador Jaroslav Olša Jr. studied Arabic, Asian and African studies at Charles University in Prague, and International Relations and Comparative European Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
Jaroslav Olša, Jr. is also the author of multiple books and articles on the history, culture, and literature of Asia and Africa, and historical relations of the non-European countries with the Czech Lands. He has also published widely about science fiction, and edited over a dozen anthologies of Czech and International science fiction. He has also curated art exhibitions, was a member of the Jury of the 2011 Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, as well as initiating numerous cultural exchanges and activities.
Cultural affairs are close to his heart, and he will be working tirelessly on promoting cultural ties between the Czech Republic and the United States during his posting in Los Angeles. He will also be focused on the history of Czech presence on the US West Coast, a topic as yet unexplored by Czech historians.
